Vario boxes

It seems the Vario boxes look like BMW thought about putting brackets/hooks on them for additional straps - the topbox, for example seems to have raised lugs on the front and rear edge of the lid. But they are not brackets/hooks as far as I can tell. So what/why are they??

Don’t know but I just got a call from my dealer telling me that bmw vario paniers are no longer being supplied due to design issues causing potential opening whilst riding !!!

They are so you can attach hooks/brackets (they provide a flat surface to what is a rounded edge.
