I had a problem last year with my vario topcase falling off the bike whilst moving (08 gs 1200,not overloaded and secured correctly on mounting plate) nearly caused a major accident:eek:(dealer replaced foc) anyway this years hols coming soon and now have no confidence in top case,Question is,Is there any surefire way of mounting the vario paniers without shi%*ing oneself every time one encounters a bump or even a slight undulation in said road,Or do I just bungee a bag on the back and have done with,If yes to question next its to the for sale section to advertise my full luggage for anybody with more confidence than I.

You've answered the question yourself. So sell it.

Life's too short....

Ratchet strap around the topbox and rack.

Personally, I'd ditch the "too small" vario box and fit a Givi box. It'll hold 2 crash hats :D

The vario top box has had at least one design modification. Mine was purchased in 2006 and just before the warranty expired I spotted a crack between the catch where it attaches to the base plate and edge. The revised design has a different catch and a metal plate where mine cracked.

Fit the Enduro Retainer Kit BMW Part Number 71 60 7 697 847, it basically bolts the top case in place.

I had exactly the same as Cornwallis.

I found a crack in the case and swapped it foc. The new box came with a new base-plate, and both were a different design. I have used the replacement item for thousands of miles, heavily loaded and with my wife leaning on it - with no problems at all.

ditto for me. Cracked topbox mounts used to be a topic of interest a few years back before the new design came out. Never heard any probs with the new design.

That's more like it chaps.

Someone asks a straightforward question that obviously bothered him. Many have, I'm sure already addressed this problem before themselves. There's almost certinly another thread on the subject.

He got opinions, ideas, part numbers, experience and support.

No mockery, aggression, bitching or anger. And no RTFM, ask the dealer or WWBMWS.

That's what we should be about.

Drilled two holes in bottom of case, heavy duty cable tie through the case and around the support, solid as anything.

When I take the box off, not often, I cut the cable tie.

When on long trips I keep a few with me, just in case I should want to remove it.

Cost = pennies :thumb

vario topbox

Having had problems with supports on my previous bike with a Givi box I fitted the BMW Topbox to my 2008 bike and it has been fine and just holds my system 6 helmet. And of course I don't have to carry another key;

Thanks very much for all the input,well appreciated.thats an example of a forum working properly without the need for tossers taking the michael.:augie
