Vario Panniers!

Getting them firmly mounted

I found, after some trial and error, that if it was just a little difficult to wriggle the panniers onto the mushroom then they were very firm. After my initial problem about two - three years ago I adjusted them like this and had no more problems.

Yes, I worked that out and just backed the mushrooms off enough so that the lock engages when wriggled slightly. This is much lower than the recommendation in the manual, where the fitting was extremely loose. I am going to add something behind the side lock to clamp more securely as well. Maybe not necessary, but seems worth the effort.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me when Vario adjustable panniers were introduced and Have they changed in size in anyway (apart from the obvious adjustment) since the first ones came out. I notice the latest ones have R1200gs on the side of them but older ones don't. Any other changes?

Thanks
Paul

Not sure how valid this is for the '08 although I believe that they have not changed the rear end, but I found this info a while ago

A useful piece of advice

That bit about " ...a clearly perceptible initial resistance...." is most important. the initial setting should be a guide only. When you are SURE they are fitted firmly loctite the 'mushrooms.'

Advice

Hi,

I recently purchased a set of Vario Panniers and have ajusted the mushroom according to diagram above. When I push down the red lock button the small window beside this button changes from black to green. Does this mean the pannier is locked in place?

Thanks
Paul

Attaching the panniers

Yes, that is right; they are locked when the red panel changes to green; be careful never to force the levers - they are fragile - if they are stiff wriggle the bags about and it should slip into place; If the bags are properly attached they will feel firmly attached, but check them frequently (says I who looks at them once every few months!) I have heard that some people locktite the locknuts - a sensible move once you are SURE the mushrooms are in the right place;
