I'm returning to the GS fold and am looking at top box options.
Previously I've had a givi V46 on an 08 GS and it served me well.
I'm looking to get a deal on a vario top box and before I commit I was wondering if one will hold a full face helmet. They look a bit small to me

I have a Schuberth S1, and that wont fit either, But I think some of the BMW helmets might ?

To state the obvious you'll need it expanded to stand any chance, and if that's your objective then perhaps a Givi may be better. I used to get my AGV and System 4 in ok.

Helmet in topbox

I think it's poor that you can't get two full face helmets in it. I could with the Givi I sold with my Africa Twin. With the Vario, I can get in one of my (medium sized) full face helmets, which include Shoei XR1000 and BMW Enduro helmet (just fits). But you can't get much else in as well

Part of the point of a top box for me is to leave stuff on the bike when I get somewhere and the Vario isn't big enough. But it came with the bike and it's not so much of an issue that I'm going to splash out on another one.

I have a large Givi trekker case that will take 2 full size helmets plus loads more. It's big enough to look silly on almost any other bike but ok on the GS. Its a shame the alloy trim panels are only on the case top.

I also have the BMW cube shaped aluminium top case. What I need now is a quick release system that lets me fit either case without faffing about with spanners to fit/remove the BMW top case carrier.

Neotec fits fine & other lids i've had did aswell, they do have to lie on there side tho'. Check the exposed screw heads for the 'vario flip over bar' either side don't have any sharp burs on them tho' cause they'll scratch ya visor/lid ;) 2 small squares of tank tape to cover em will stop it. :rob

My medium sized AGV (with NO peak) fitted in the Vario box just fine. But I replaced it with a Givi because I need to put 2 helmets in there.

Good point - my helmets go in, but only when on their side. The BMW Enduro helmet has to go in with the top facing the front of the bike and you have to press slightly on the vario lid to close it. You can see the lid bowing out very slightly as the catches click closed. Probably not ideal, but I'm a skinflint

Buy the box and a cable lock or pacsafe helmet bag? Lock the lid to the bike as I do.

I don't want a chuffing great box on the back, vario collapsed is ideal for bits and bobs and expanded I can get a large C3 in (on its side!). Pacsafe when missus on the back

What you mean when you leave the bike,
You pacsafe her to it as well!!:D

I leave my helmet on the mirror, and occasionally lock it with a cycle combi lock, why scratch it in a top box?
