I have read somewhere that this thing (vario top box) can detach itself when you least expect it, if this is the case, can someone answer my question.

Where is the weak link in this setup?

Does the box detach itself from the black mounting plate, and the mounting plates stays fixed to the bike?, or

Does the black mounting plate detach itself from the bike, and take the box with it?

The scenario I'm interested in is with the box mounted instead of the pillion seat.

Thanks in advance for the feedback, and safe riding

My topbox tumbled down Piccadilly yesterday after going over a pot hole.
It was the back rack and empty! :(

I've used it 90% of the time over the last year without any worries.
Taking to Bahnstormer today for them to check it out, BMW have changed the design since.

From what I've read, the case plastic cracks at the base of the box. This means the box detatches from the black mounting plate.

BMW have change the design now, so there is a reinforcing rib across the area the box cracks, although I think some people have still had issues with the new boxes. (two different part numbers)

The weak area is the plastic that covers the metal U-shaped latch that is at the rear most area of the box (when on the bike) at the bottom.

Hope this is of some help. There are photos of a cracked box and the new rib design, on this site..

Yes fellas, it seems like this topic has been well covered, and thanks for the replies.

What I had in mind was to use the BMW mounting plate and bolt a medium-size PELICAN CASE to this. So it doesn't appear that I will have a problem, although I didn't plan to use the two manual locking posts on the mounting plate, so I can remove the whole unit (box and mounting plate) with the key. This may present its own problems, not using the extra locking posts, any thoughts?

I believe they now supply an enduro kit which consists of some roofing bolts and washers. The latching do-dah just can't handle shock loads, even without any cracks or damage beforehand.

I have some pictures of the latest top box latch arrangement off my 07 GS12 which has a built in metal plate and securing pin. I can upload these if only I knew how?

*Commence playing stuck record*

I lost three of these sodding things flying off the back of my bike, both from the rack and the back seat.

Eventually I gave up trying to put up with it; BMW gave me a full refund.

Suggest others do the same.

*Remove stuck record, place in safe place for future use*
:)
I'll try to find a piccy of where it breaks.

Bolted down top box, really................what's the use of that?
