OK, so it seems the Vario top box is not too big for most. Looking at regular posts I get the idea that plenty need something twice the size.

But I normally have only a few small bits and pieces rattling around - visor cleaning stuff etc. I've been looking for a small bag to stop the rattling but came across this on ebay

Anyone bought one? Any good?
What do others use?

£19:99 - They had better be good.

Seriously, look at the inside of your top box and look at a cargo net.... Do you think YOU could make something pretty similar for a couple of notes and twenty minutes in the garage? If you zoom in on the picture you can even see how he affixed the net.

There's a thread on UKGSer from a bod who did just that.

You may be right - but my 20 minute projects normally turn into half day projects, searching the web for something or other, a trip to B&Q etc. etc.

As do mine....
£19 odd well spent - works a treat in mine

Olly, you can put visor cleaning stuff in your pocket.

How?

You do not need the fancy spray bottles of cleaning fluid from HG, or anything like it to rattle around in a cavernous top box.

Get yourself an artificial chamy cloth. Cut off a tidy square, roughly 3" x 3". Put it into a smallish pastic bag. Wet it thoroughly and tip out the water. The cloth will stay wet all day. Got a bit dry? Wet it again. Why artificial? As it's not natural it won't go mouldy or stink. When you come home, rinse it out and leave to dry for a few minutes. It will last you a couple of years. It will also be handy to wipe the dew off your adventure bike, when you have been forced to leave it outside, the biker friendly hotel you chose not saving a heated garage.

To polish? A similar sized square of micro-fibre cloth. Also good for polishing bling. Keep it in another small plastic bag. The truly fastidious can add a cut off toothbrush, to clean out the air vents.

The advantage of putting the two bags in your pocket? When you wander off for your coffee you will probably have your jacket and helmet with you. Undo your jacket pocket at leisure whilst sat chatting to your mates and polish your lid at will. Your mates will gawp open mouthed at your genius.

For anything else, like disc lock, puncture repair kit, you can get a very simple soft bag that hangs under the rear rack. They work fine and do not rattle. No need for a topbx at all.

PS Not related at all, but if you want to put something really useful in your cargo net instead of bottles of visor cleaning spray, get a http://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Secu...ecurity/Locks/Special-locks/Combiflex-Pro-202

Really good. Loop it through a helmet, jacket, the zip of your tankbag or whatever and wander off reasonably comfortable that it will be there when you come back. Easy to use, which means you will use it more often.... And so much better than leaving a helmet dangling on a mirror.

Just glue one of them clear document wallets to the inside of your top box lid. You know the ones, either with a plastic zip or press stud type

Couple of pounds from Rymans

Works a treat for me.

A few plastic p clips and a bit of shockcord knitting inside the lid was what did. Holds docs, first aid kit and cost almost nothing.

Yeah, it looks a simple mod but a cargo net was never going to be anything else.

I'm too busy (or too lazy) to find the right clips, net and cord so, for the sake of £20, I'll order one and will let you know how I get on.

Wapping - I like the idea of the wire Abus lock and may just get one of those.

I was far too tight too spend twenty quid on some glorified cargo nets! So I made my own. All I did was buy two cheap cargo nets £5.38 for the pair -http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180910554065?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 & one pack of 'd'ring for £1.88 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110995283...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649.

The BMW Vario panniers have the screws & mounts ready so took me less than ten minutes to do both sides for £7.26 pair, They work just as well as the above & I have put my spare gloves, neck warmer, visor cleaning kit in one side & my documents & tubeless repair kit in the other

Sorted!

I went ahead and ordered one of these cargo net kits. It is actually pretty decent - better than a normal cargo net. If, like me, you can't be bothered to make your own kit, I can give it my recommendation

£20 for a cargo net looks pretty good value to me! Can't recall having any suitable material lying around the garage so would need to source some, then I'd need to work out the dimensions and how to construct something suitable. Nah, can't be bothered, I'll open another beer and make the most of this good weather .... and just order one ready made perfect for the jop :thumb We tend to do it that way in Cheshire :D

I got one for the top box. I'm really pleased with it it may get some for the panniers.
