Vario Top Box

Anybody had the box jump off for no apparent reason.

Put mine on today and did the usual check by pulling at it to make sure its on then 70 miles later it fell off. Thankfully it survived but its hard to be confident in it now.

Side one

I had a side one go after about a week. Really pay close attention to exactly how all the bits lock. Never had a probelm with top box itself but the bracket nuts have shaken loose before making the top box wobble alarmingly. Perhaps this might have shaken yours loose?

There is a thread on this somehwere...the 'mushrooms' need to be set to the right torque or else.

Was it the top box that came off or a pannier?

Never trusted the topbox mounting, mines got 2 bolts through the base as I never go anywhere without it anyway.

The earlier top boxes had a problem where the rear mount would split - the newer top boxes have a metal plate behind the rear mounting point to try and prevent this happening.

Have a look to see if there's a split/crack around the rear locking mount point.

as slowdowm sad my topbox was 06 model and fell off bike last year had split under box at locking point to the top plate the new topbox has a renforced plate on it and is still on bike

Yep, seemed to be a big problem on the older topboxes (topbox's?). Plenty of discussion about it on here if you search. Mine is a late '06 design and I have never had any problem with it although I do check it really well when I put it on. It really amazes me that the mechanism appears to be designed backwards. The hooks near the rear seat should be facing forwards so there is more chance of it staying on even if the latch lets go.

Sorry should have said it was the topbox and there is no obvious sign of a split or crack anywhere on the bottom.
I am travelling from Nottingham to Stranraer on Friday so I think I'll get some straps onto it for my own peace of mind.

Ive got an 08 gs and on a recent trip to france the top box decided to fall off,This was the last part of the trip and i am sure the box was located corectly,The box slid along the road (100mts) and stayed shut and locked,I vas very lucky not to have caused a major accident.I am posotive the box was fitted correctly and cannot trust it in future.I went to the supplying dealer and was told there were issues with earlier versions of the vario luggage but now it was all sorted,They did still supply me with a new box though.
