Help! My vario topbox expanding mechanism started making crunching noises and wasn't working properly so I thought that I would take it apart and reassemble.

Stage 1 is now complete i.e. I have taken it to bits, however I am a bit stuck with stage 2 i.e. reassembly. It's pretty obvious how it works and nothing is broken or missing, but I don't know how to align the plastic cogs so that it will work when reassembled.

Has anyone else taken one apart, and if so, how did you get it back together again.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Can't help but for anyone else with a similar problem when mine started getting stiff and creaking I stuck a pressure washer in the expansion joint and gave it a good blast. No problems since.

Thanks. Yes, that helps, although on the topbox there are no external stainless steel screws and I had already taken the mechanism apart :blast

I have now reassembled it. The thing to do, for anyone else who wants to take it apart, is to just remove the six screws, three either side, in the bottom, that fix the expanding mechanism to the case and then pull the case apart into the base and the lid part. This then allows access to the expansion mechanism for lubrication or repair. It isn't that hard to align if you have taken it apart either, it only took me about half an hour to do the whole thing.
