How much weight can these things really carry? Is the quoted 5kg payload really just health & safety gone made?

I'm looking to use mine in conjunction with a tailpack on the pillion seat for a week away working, don't want the hassle of panniers as I'll need to filter a lot in traffic. Need to transport some stuff in reasonable security, laptop etc.

What sort of weight do you guy's load up to?

I think it applies to most bikes. But if your suspension is in good nick then you can safely go over the 5kg but any weight you do carry there should be thought of including top case weight as well. On my 1150 inc. an ali case that already weighs in at about 6-7kg I'm putting in a big chain for locking up (11kg) plus junk which I'd guess it's about 3-5kg so all that lot is around the 20-25kg (it's a lot actually) and I barely notice it. But also make sure the box is well mounted and the load inside can't bounce around.

As for gear on the pillion seat, whatever you put there could I guess equal a passenger weight, but again you'd have to ensure it's well tied down!

The payload of the Vario top box is 5kg's (excludes the actual weight of the box itself) I phoned a local dealer and the parts guy confirmed that, but he also said that's massively on the cautious side, he throws a huge amount of weight in his and whenever they have customers bikes in with boxes on they're always way above what the brochure says, he's yet to hear of a failure (the thing falling off or the weight cracking/bending anything).

I have carried loads in mine. Two pair of boots, jeans t shirts, 2 cans of cidre, camera, and anything else the wife decided we might need. Never an issue must have done at least 5000 miles on that bike two up. never a problem.
