Evening all, long time no speak. I've just ordered a GS Adventure to replace my sadly bent R1200GS and I'm mulling over the luggage options. I know the luggage thing has been done to death but I can't find reference to the particular combination I'm considering:

I would like to use my Vario side cases on the GSA, I know this is straight forward and been done by lots of folk. I would also like to use a Givi top box, now I understand the standard GSA frame / rack will be removed if I fit the Varios so the usual Givi GSA fittings will be no use. I already have the Givi top box fitting hardware for the standard GS, does anyone know if this will fit the GSA sub-frame?

Thanks,

Martin

AFAIK, The rear subframe of the 1200 GS and GSA are the same.

As such you should be able to use the Vario rails with something like the Givi SR-689 top-box rack

As the owner of a GSA with Vario's and Givi trekker topbox I confirm the GS/GSA subframes are the same.
I agree that the Givi 689 is better than the 684

Thanks Big Red, I suspected it would be OK but it's nice to have confirmation from someone who has the same combo. I already have the 689 set up but I think I'll get it powder coated & source some stainless fasteners before putting it on the new bike.:thumb2

Hi Martin.
I recently bought a 2006 1200 GSA that had been fitted from new with Vario panniers and top box. I have a Givi Maxia and wanted to fit it. I ordered from Motorcycle Planet the mounting plate for the GSA (E250) and tried to fit it this morning without success. I have just checked their website and the rack on my bike is GS1200 and requires either fitting kit SR684 or SR689 at twice the price. My bike has the raised aluminium rack and a tubular steel support at the rear, which appears to be standard fit on the GS1200.
Hope this helps.

Geoff.

Hi Martin, I have had varios for years on 1200gs and recently moved to gsa, i have to say the ally boxes are far superior, whilst they are not cheap imho far superior and look better on the bike .
good luck

If you want to fit a Givi Monokey topbox on a GSA, the Givi code for a model specific topbox adaptor is SRA5102. I ordered one from an Italian company and even with EU delivery was substantially cheaper than buying in UK.

But possibly not if he has already fitted Vario rails so removed the GSA rear rack!

Nothing against ally cases but already got the Varios, inner bags, and Givi bits. We find them perfect for 10 - 12 day jaunts and versatile enough to shrink for a quick weekend. Big issue is the top box, Mrs L. and I like a box that will swallow 2 x helmets, generally not possible with ally side cases as the top openings hit the big back box.

im looking at fitting gsa panniers to my gs, have managed to pick up pannier rails for a great price on ebay, if your looking to sell top box racking i'd be interested, thanks!

Thanks for the offer Phil but I always keep all the standard bits to put back on before I sell 'em on.

Cheers.

I remember when my side boxes looked that good before i tried using them as a lean-to for my bike while it was having a rest on its side.:blast

Hepco & Becker make alloy plates with Givi fittings.

I'm looking for a GSA, but personally find the usual cases too wide and too far away from the bike. Has anyone fitted a pair of small exhausts cans under the seat that might allow cases to be carried closer to the bike's seat frame?

I'm also thinking of switching from Vario top box & panniers to ally ones.

I like the look of Pablo1's ally set up, but I need to be able to quickly remove any panniers to park the bike up at the side of my house, there just isn't enough room for my GSA with panniers on.

Do the BMW boxes detach easily or do you need spanners every time ?:nenau

Thanks or the replies guys, the job is now done and very straight forward it was too. Parts needed are case holder 46 54 7 695 986 plus screws 46 54 7 705 577, no idea why they don't come with the case holder kit but they need ordering separately.
A quick ten minutes with the Torx bits see the back end naked:

Another ten minutes has the Vario case holders on:

The redundant scaffold, this is definitely made for hard travelling, it weighs a bloody ton!

Varios on:

Finished job with Givi rack, steel bits freshly powder coated and all fasteners stainless steel:

For anyone with similar ideas -

Givi sell the mounting mushrooms and latch block as a kit so you could have a mounting plate laser cut locally to suit the bike.

There is also a tubular steel "plate" now sold under the Kappa brand.

I asked my local BMW dealer why the GSA luggage frames waste so much space between case and bike. He said because they double as crash bars, so I guess that explains the weight, but I still think they are way too wide.

Hattech also do a nice stainless steel frame and an aluminium plate drilled for the Givi mount blocks (Nippy does them). The frame provides a lower mounting position for the top box which, personally, I think looks better than the floating spaceship effect of the standard mount.

Frame here.

Needs to be ordered with the "Italy 1" mount plate which is drilled for Givi mounts.
