I was speaking with my local BMW dealer the other day, whilst purchasing a new rubber bung to put into the timing hole in the flywheel cover, after I'd done the usual and pushed the first one right in, 'cos its a complete PITA to get in 'cos some daft and probably pissed Bavarian designer gave no thought to how the hell you are supposed to get it back in, with all the cables and fuel injection systems in the bloody way.
Any road up, the mechanic, sorry technician I spoke to said, dont worry about taking the bung out, we never do. Look for the lines marked on the sprockets that carry the chain wot turn the valve over, make sure they are horizontal, waggle the valves, whichever ones are loose will tell you which cylinder is TDC. Simple, et voila! Saves the grief with getting the bung back in.
I have not heard this from anywhere at all.
Contrast, compare and discuss please. Any thoughts?
