Why is it that yearly vehicle tax for motorbikes seem so high, but keep creeping up every year.

My diesel car has remained £20/yr since bought (luckily before the newer car tax bands), but my bike bought in the same yr was higher initially (understandable since properly more emissions) but keeps increasing year on year.

Considering I’m pretty confident that bikes have a lower impact on the roads than cars, this seems a bit unfair towards bikers...

Thought?

To be fair, a car with four people in it probably has less emissions than a bike with two people. Most people think that a car is a necessity and a bike a luxury.
Not sure why I am saying this because I now live in France where we don't have road tax on cars or bikes.

count yourself lucky,

My stealth wagon costs £324 per year , it should be £500+

I only use it a hand full of times so yes it's it expensive

Try running a car in Ireland.

My last car.... 2009 Volvo S80 D5 Auto, nothing too fancy or extravagant.
€1200 road tax.

S20 5G sent this......

Absolutely ridiculous.

High tax often given as being "because of the enviroment".

What bollocks. If this were the case, why are they considering road charging for so called "green" EVs?

Because they simply need to collect tax. Why pretend? The bullshit from government the world over is legendary...

Motorcycles are stung because they're perceived as a luxury toy, not a form of transport.

Totally agree. Like all things we keep paying. The government do not want bikes on the road.
We will be forced into EV as they will tax petrol & Diesel cars to the hilt.

In about 2 to 3 years when the economy is recovering, fuel will then have more duty loaded.

They really are against personal transport. Cities with clean air taxes, lack of investment in road repairs.

Because EVs cause greenhouse emissions in their build and running, albeit less so (apparently around 20% less)

I always thought that the tax was meant for to support the roads and the network. Thus a bike has less of an impact and should be charged less.

But in that case-opening a can of worms- pedal bikers should also be charged.

Its not called road tax any more and is not linked to the support of the road network. Its called vehicle excise duty. I would expect that VED and fuel tax will rise in the next few years to force people down the EV route since grant incentives have been cut i.e. more stick less carrot for ICE vehicles, also in the short term there is likely to be more tax on purchase of ICE vehicles to bring them up to the price of EV's. Loss of VED and Petrol/Diesel fuel tax will cause a big hole in the governments coffers :)

As indeed they are for the most part. Governments have two objectives in this, to raise revenue and discourage carbon emissions.

Seems sensible to increases taxes on inessential carbon emissions. I don't necessarily like it personally, but its hard to fault the logic.

You thought wrong. That was true when it was introduced, but no longer

Thing is people use cars for essential transport, most motorcycle journeys are recreational

Pedal cyclists contribute very little CO2 which is what VED is all about these days (nd generating revenue).

Thought..... um..... er...... wait a minute..... no..... um..... it’s no good, I’ll have to ask a mate...... My mate says: It is a tax on WC owners, who live in the numpty section, who can’t imagine life outside of the community of like minds. He’s not often wrong.

They are not luxury items for many folk.

It's extremely easy to fault the logic.

Why can you buy a car with zero tax (as my wife's is - it's petrol powered, like my motorcycle) and drive it 100k plus miles a year chucking out emissions right and left for free, but a motorcycle doing 2 or 3k a year is charged 100 quid?

As I said, it's bollocks. Nowt to do with carbon emissions there, as the car is polluting far more with all that mileage. It's just prejudice against the motorcycle owner.
