Working on a helmet camera mounting project, seen number of people who use velcro pads, looks ideal for me needs (3M Dual Lock looks popular) but couple of people have mentioned to me to about possible corrosive elements on the "sticky" bit that sticks onto the helmet. In particular if contains solvent.

Can these stick-on velcro strips harm/corrode a helmet?

I'll stick me neck on the block and say no!

Years ago when we had polycarbonate lids, there were lots of do's and dont's, (and I'm guessing that this is where some of these suggestions have come from) but a modern fibreglass lid will be fine. :thumb

Thanks :thumb2

The people who voiced their concerns to me, are the older generation :augie

:thumb It was a big thing then - Keep yer lid in a bag 'cos the UV light will break it down over time, don't put stickers on yer lid ..... etc etc..

elastic head band might be an option...:augie

fibre glass and carbon fibre helmets are less likely to be affected but if your concerned don't fall off and change the crash helmet more often. Can't recall what the normal time scale is but it's got to be change every 2-3 years with reasonable use.

so if you changed it every year it should be alright....:thumb2

I suspect it depends on risk as well if was doing something really risky a new crash helmet may well the less evil...

Helmet manufacturers say every 5 years as a guideline but, in practice, it depends on how often you use it and how well you look after it.

i've had my Shoei about since I passed my test in 2008, do maybe time to experiment with various camera mounting solutions and invest in a new lid next year! :)

Thanks again :thumb2

Contour HD camera is fine velcroed onto my TourX. Used the circular Heavy Duty circles which matched the Contour round surface mount great.

Funnily enough I was talking to a man selling this type of camera at Excel last year, and his advice was to stick heavy duty Duct tape on the helmet and then stick the camera mount to the duct tape. It does make sense. :thumb2

Funnily enough I am using gaffer tape at the moment, never thought to stick Velcro that.

My only concern would be duct tape peeling in hotter weather

I have a tour-x and use velcro loop (actually a server patch-panel strap) to attach my POV to the peak, then run the cable behind the right cheek pad so the mic is by my mouth, it's all semi permanent and seems to work well.
