Is anyone going to the start of the Vendee Globe?
I go to France on Saturday and will be in Les Sables d'Olonne from Wednesday through to the start on Sunday 9th.
I went to the last start four years ago and it was a really good few days - the pontoons are open to the public and the skippers are happy to chat while their shore crews work on the boats.
On the start day the yachts are towed out one at a time from the marina, through the harbour and then race around the cans just offshore before disappearing out into the Atlantic. The first boat came out at 0800 on the Sunday and there were huge crowds to see them all off. As we approched Les Sables all the cars were being turned away at the entrance to the town - usual Gallic response to bikes and we were waved through the road block and parked at the marina entrance.
The Brits are well represented this year although Alex Thomson got holed by a french fishing boat a few days ago just outside the harbour! Repairs are in hand and he should start.
