How hot does the rear brake disk get! I am in Gabon at the moment and I replaced the rear break pads in Cameroon with new ones; I was driving for a while before that with very little pad left so there is a slight grove on the disk; I checked that the pads are not sticking; the wheel rotates freely when on center stand: if I drive the bike and use the rear brake for a while the disk gets very hot; is it my imagination or does the rear disk always get this hot so hot that u can not touch it; the fornt disk are always a little warm: Any thoughts ...Mike

If the brake is not dragging then you dont have a problem, its normal for the disc to get hot, it converts the bikes momentum into heat.

As long as the wheel rotates freely and the pads aren't sticking there isn't a problem.
Are you sure that you are not accidentally putting pressure on the brake lever when riding?.

Have you got linked brakes? If you have (like me) then the back brake will apply even if you're just using the front brake.

I had a problem with a missing clip from the back brake caliper a few months ago. The only way I noticed it was there was a really high pitched squeal when I pushed the bike out of the garage - couldn't hear a thing when riding. My rear disk got too hot to touch, so I deliberately used just the front wheel on one trip to see if it was still hot. Sure enough it was, but then I realised my 05 1150 GSA has linked brakes. :augie

Also remember that some heat will be transfered from the final drive to the disc, so it will be warmer than the front discs.

thks fro all the replies: it is a 2002 Gs Adv, there is no squeal sound when I rotate the wheel all seems free, checked all the pins and all is clear this disk is more than jsut warm it too hot to touch, is this normal...

check the pad is sliding accross the rails as it should by pushing really hard onto the caliper

sometime they get stuck and force the non piston side of the caliper to not retract after being applied.

i had this problem on mine and can be sorted easily.

Instead of using the rear brake and then feeling how hot it is, try riding the bike for a mile WITHOUT using the rear brake and then check if it's hot.

Yep ......... Like steppers says ........ Ride round abit without using the back brake. If you can drop your knob on it then it should be sound .....:D

Met a man last year riding a 1100S his rear boot had been destroyed and was trying to get somewhere to have it looked at, couldn't work out the cause except there had been a lot of heat in that area and recently had his pads changed.
Some time later I suffered the same problem myself, now I need a new rear disc, (I'll be phoning you Mr Steptoe) and change the rear prop boot, possible cause i think is using pads of unknown origin, and while I'm at it I may put some proper pads in!

im using steptoes pads, great so far, no complaints, loads of miles and im sure loads more to come. Will get my next set from him too! :aidan
