After two days I've got to the second stop on my trip (N Italy -via black forest). After several weekends preparing the bike (inc. new big bearing and paralever bearings -so glad I got in there!) Adjusting the valves, balancing the throttle bodies etc. The bike was just wonderful, especially with the sorted suspension done earlier this year, handling really is very good, even with a ton of luggage. I think I grinned most of the way and not a drop off rain -except in Italy, where a snorkel would have been handy!!!

Reason for the post. I'm wondering if I have not balanced the throttle bodies properly? Quite possible, never done it before and that twinmax isn't particularly helpful! The bike has some sweet spots, but outside those it's s little vibey. You know, the kind of micro vibration that you feel in your hands after getting off the bike. So around an indicated 85mph/4750rpm is dead smooth (and remains this way up to 90-95,I didn't go any faster). In the run up to this, say 78mph/4000rpm the vibes are there, a little lower than this it's fine also. Those of you familiar with kmh will know this means I'll be happiest just a tad over the prescribed 130kmh...

Are these vibes 'normal' or is this something that can be improved by better valve adjustment and throttle body balance? Which I'm in no doubt is possible. I'm confident the wheels are balanced OK. Also pretty sure I put the FD back together properly!

Hi mate . Heading out to Italy in end months my self, yeah I rebuild 1100rt and same think it run smoothly till 3500 rpm then vibrate till 4100rpm and smooth out after , I think is difference when you balance you throttle at high revs some people do at 2500rpm some 3k , 4k , so vibration could be any ware depend on your driving style. So next time balance body's try divergent rpm

Thanks beemer pimp. I had a few hours in the saddle to contemplate the causes. It's good your thinking confirms my suspicions, but I don't have enough experience with these motors.

The vibes might be better described as a buzzing feeling in the bars.

Hopefully you have better luck with the weather than me on your trip. The rain over here yesterday afternoon was torrential. But the bike was flawless, as was my gear, thankfully! Of course it's beautiful here now, like nothing happened!

Enjoy your trip Rodin, I'm heading Romania way next weekend so hoping the weather holds out as I'll be camping!
Yes they do vibe at differing throttle positions but overall are pretty smooth considering what they actually are ;). Vibration free mirrors are a pretty good sign of a well balanced bike and a re pretty useful to check tickover balance. If it's bothering you there will certainly be somewhere near you now who would do a balance up using a GS911 I'd imagine?

Thanks Mike. You'll be luckier than me I'm sure. My timing was err...perfect for that storm!

I think I'm just going to ride in the sweet spots for now. When I get back I might just do as you suggest ref the 911.

Enjoy your trip!
