Hi Just wondering if anyone can give a bit of advice on vibration on my '01 1150 GS which I'm pretty sure developed today....
On my way to Sherlocks in Devon to get some pre-trip work done bike ran smooth and fine down the M5 cruising at 75 (+ with a bit of 'occasional' overtaking) BUT about a couple of miles after turning on to the A361 I noticed a vibration develop at 4000 revs (6th). Felt like when there are not enough revs for the speed and engine is under load. Not serious but very noticeable. I thought it might be road surface, but tried different gears / speeds and still it appeared at 4000 revs. Did not notice on the motorway doing similar speed and felt the change. Bike still ran ok apart from that and acceleration fine. Think I nearly got pulled by a jam sandwich which came up behind just after a roundabout as I was concentrating on trying speed /gear combos !!!! He hung behind for a while and I behaved so he went on.....
I have told the mechanic at Sherlocks about it and to check it out, but has anyone here had a similar problem and should I be concerned ????:nenau
cheers for any ideas.

Are we discussing an 1150? I am sure Sherlocks will check, but I would look at throttle bodies balance. Although having said that my mates 1150 is very vibey at those engine speeds, every setting is correct, and am considering a strip and rebalance! :comfort

Funnily enough, I was on the M6 today when I noticed additional vibrations through the handlebars and footpegs at 4000 rpm +/- 100 and about 75-80 mph. Mine's a 2010 twin-cam GSA. Should I be worried? :nenau

its fooooked,,, do you want me to do you a favour and take it off your hands,, i have a few hundred quid burning a hole in my pocket :thumb

Ir its doing it at minimal throttle, in all gears (and neutral) It's probably the throttle bodies out of balance......

If it was doing it at just one speed, no matter what the throttle load, or gear, I'd say "check your wheel balance"

And sometimes they just vibrate. Mine sometimes does and sometimes it doesn't, but when it does it is around 4k. No throttle body or valve adjustment needed for it start or go away. Me no worry, that simplifies life greatly.

Coil ? I'd never have thought of that ! would that explain recent lumpy running at tickover and a sort of hestitating when driving at steady revs as well ?? I hadn't connected the two but would make sense !?
Could well be i had a similar feel when one of my stick coils went. I define it as a sort of chugging feel then it would pick up again.

What tyres do you use?.Is the vibration worse when cornering?.
Check for play in the rear wheel big bearing.
Check tightness of any crashbars etc, especially since someones been working on the bike.
Make sure the TBs are balanced at 4K rpm.

thanks for all the suggestions - but the vibration started after having driven at similar speed for 1/2 hr then noticeably 'came in' at 4000 revs. Tried different speeds in different gears but it was still only at 4000 revs. Has not happened before ! road surface good, tyres good, is pulling well but has been a bit lumpy at tickover recently. Ho Humm hope it can be sorted cause driving on Mway with that through the bars wont be fun.

If its happening at 4000rpm in any gear then it could be either the gearbox or the engine. The wheels, tyres and final drive can be ruled out. Is it still there if you pull in the clutch at those revs? if so it would point to the mainshaft in the gearbox, bearings?

Has the clutch been replaced?.... Because if it's done 50,000 miles, the material will be very thin and it may have shed a tiny piece, throwing it out of balance.....

Just got the bike back from Sherlocks, various bits of work done including - final drive all good, driveshaft all good, FD bearings all good, throttles balanced, its running a bit smoother at tickover and steady throttle now - Mechanic said he thought the vib wasnt too bad, but its still doing it at 4000 + revs on way home quite uncomfortable if you want to cruise on motorway. Again it doesn't matter what gear or speed its the engine revs. The vib picks up frequency with the revs above 4000 but disappears to normal below. Its a real noticeable buzzing through the bars....... Thanks for the suggestion CPL - The bit off the clutch sounds a real possibility how could I check that ? Going to service it (all oils/filters plugs) but dont think it will cure it. Its much more of a mechanical vibration linked to revs than an 'engine management' misrunning.:nenau
Is it expensive / difficult to do the clutch ????

Bugger, thats expensive to do the clutch ! just spent nearly £600 on other bits ! I read last night about vibration set up by end float on the rockers ? anyone had experience of this and can they be adjusted ? Did my tappets a week before this happened. Ive read lots about vibs being a common feature at certain revs on these bikes, but when all has been fine and something changes (to the point of being uncomfortable) mid journey surely its cause for concern ?

try putting a 'carb tune device' on it and run it up to 4tho to see if one cyl is
out of sync, I got mine from motoworks and its been very usefull.

my r1150gs is smooth as can be at 4tho and it shouldnt vibrate to the point of being such a bother, it may also pay to get someone else in your area to have a test drive to see what they think, :beerjug::beerjug::beerjug:
ride safe,
John
