After repeated early aftermarket headlight bulb failures on my R1200RT (The original factory fitted bulbs lasted 4 years) are these "ExtraDuty" bulbs made by Phillips the answer? has anybody used them? they are a little more expensive than your normal replacement bulb !!
The 4x4 brigade seem to like em!

The ultimate solution is probably HID in your dipped beam and one of those in the main beam.

We had a problem at work when Ford changed the headlight lenses for plastic items on the the transits. They don't dissipate heat as quickly and efficiently as a glass lens so the bulbs overheat (Fords explaination).
We were going through two headlight bulbs a week at one point.
As soon as we began using Bosch bulbs the problem went away overnight

Sadly not so good on the F800GS, due to this effect...

Next step for me is a Halfords "Extreme Brilliance" bulb.

However perceived wisdom (Fanum's for one) reckons they won't last. Time will tell though.
