Video playback problem

I've just bought a new Acer laptop and all's fine except when I try to play video it plays sound OK but the picture is in weird colours.It's the same in Windows media player or Realplayer.DVDs play OK.
Is this a take it back job or is it something in setup I can sort myself?

try a codec pack install

Fixed! Reducing the video acceleration did the trick.

possibly using rubbish MS drivers for the video card.

graphic chip manufacturers website. read the instructions on installing them carefully.
