Nice ride out today, went through the local wine producing regions of the Holme valley? yes the Vineyards of Holmforth. Last week I passed the Aire Valley Vineyards outside Temple Newsom Leeds. Is this a sign of global warming? Has anybody tried the wine? I have never seen it in my local Booze buster offlicence. My last local wine was elderberry from Lindisfarne and it was Sh***

From Wikipedia

Though evidence of Vitis vinifera vines on the British Isle dates back to the Hoxnian Stage when the climate was much warmer than it is today, the British interest in wine production really took foot following the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD. Amphorae from Italy indicate that wine was regularly transported by sea, around the Iberian peninsula to Britain at great expense. The development of wine producing regions in Bordeaux and Germany made supplying the needs of Roman colonists much easier at less cost. The presence of amphora production houses founds in what is now Brockley and Middlesex indicates that the British probably had vineyards of their own as well.

That's just down the road from me. I've never tried the wine and knowing it's located next to one of the biggest landfil sites in West Yorkshire, I'm not sure I would want to :barf

What a shame Martin, we'd have met up with you and Judith if we'd known.......
Temple Newsam way that is :)

Could it be Leventhorpe Vineyard you passed, we're not far from there (google it, positive comments from the likes of Oz Clarke and Rick Stein don't you know)!!!!!

While since we've been but lovely people who seem to know about wine making in our climate. We like a decent glass but wouldn't profess to be connoisseurs, my brother knows a bit more than us and always buys something from them when he's over here :)

Drop Chris a pm when you're next over this way, you can always fall over here if you and Judith fancy a little wine tasting :) x
