Just taken delivery of new Dell Laptop. Comes with Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1 operating system. Gradually getting to find my way around, but one big problem sticks out. When I play MPEG files that work OK on my XP desktop computer, they take a very long time to load and start playing. Initial browsing of the internet suggest I need to download codecs, and I've tried a few with no success. I would be very gratefull for the collected wisdom of site members as to how to go about sorting the problem.

alternative media player

I would recommend that you download and install VLC. It is a media player that comes with loads of different codecs and seems to play most file formats without a problem. I've never had any performance issues with it either.

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried VLC, but had problems getting it to run, so running with the suggestion of a 3rd party media player tried Divx, and lo and behold the mpegs play. Will retry VLC at later date. Thanks very much chaps. If you read this I have posted another question and would be gratefull for your help again.
