Vista wireless

ok so has anyone else experienced the urge to throw a brand new laptop through the nearest window?

today the wifes laptop arrived from dell, and i set about getting it ready for public consumtion (internet set up, pictures put on, AV sorted etc etc)

now I am sure that vista is supposed to be the most wireless ready thing since sliced bread.

so why the hell wont it bloody work!!!!!!!

first it connects, then disconnects, then wont connect, restart, same happens all over again..

any thoughts from our gurus?

my old laptop is working fine by the way, never had to do more than enter the isp user name/ password

and to think that I asked for XP, no sir, we only do vista now

Hidden SSID? I get that with XP when I have a new device to add to my wireless router and have the SSID hidden.
Also look at WAP/WEP keys

I've read a few reports about problems with Vista and connecting to t'internet... mainly through incompatible ISP software, BT being one, though I think they temporarily resolved issues by by-passing the ISP software and just using the direct link to the router...

Saying that, you would have thought it would have been supplied in working order as it's brand new and not a operating system upgrade... Not heard a good thing yet about Dell's after sales service though.

And it's probably something to do with the usual Microsoft methods of 'public domain' software debugging as per Win95/98/ME/2000/XP... Roll on service packs 1, 2, 3....

Is your router set to only talk to specified MAC addresses?

Personally, I avoid all of Mr Gates' new products until they are at least 18 months old, although I appreciate you haven't much influence in the matter if Dell have moved totally to Vista.

Nope they could-a still opted for XP, I was offered the choice yesterday, the client is getting Vista

I've got a fairly standard Netgear card in my second machine and Vista didn't want to know......and checking into it, they're not going to support it.

There was a pretty good chance It cold have been worked around with other drivers but I couldn't be bothered.....I stuck Vista on , had a play then binned it and went back to XP 'cos that's pretty rock solid.

Scottykm....if you've still got the XP disc from the previous machine, If I were you I'd use that on this new one.......Vista looks great and has some nice GUI features but it's just not worth the hassle, particularly if you like your music and have a good collection that has been 'obtained' from various places

NB You may need to make a call to use the XP disc on the new machine, but as long as you have the serial etc, they'll do it......or if not, it's very easy to get around permanently

Hate to say it but if it wern't supplied by an employer. Why Dell??

I know Vista can be a problem, and that we all hate Microsoft, but this new OS isn't going to go away. By people like us messing around, helping each other out; eventually we'll get the the little bugs and issues sorted.
Stick with it guys!!!!!!!!!!

As for the connection problem, could it be the router not recognising the laptop??

Thanks for the comments guys, as to why dell, tbh i dont know, the wife saw it and said i want that one, then man from dell told me vista only.

now i got me a new router at the weekend, it even had a vista compatable sticker on it, set it all up nice and slowly, getting it working, on both my laptops (1 is a 'copy' of xp home) and the desktop,
both laptops connected fine, however after abot 30 mins the vista one said no ta, im off!

it then reconnected when i told it too, then jumped out againg, this time after 20 min, I gave up and went to bed!

Dell, I've installed probley in the region of 500 desktops will over 50 laptops only one was a problem out of the box that I can remember other than the usual KUI (keyboard user interface) things on the end of users arms..LOL

Vista Currently running about five in the production inviroment including my own office machine (this one) cool no worries as yet, Just done a Dell / Vista / Wireless / BT this PM.

Only problem was BT Disc DO NOT USE IT why do they insist on doing every thing different to everybody else....Wan***s If full of pooh you don't need and don't work.

Regards connecting and disconneting Dells do like the mains plugged in get the battrey up to full steam, if not wireless goes to sleep after a period inactivity you can tweek the settings so as to keep it up, and not to power save on the wireless card.

Don't Knock Vista till you've used it, I quite like it aready, it is much nicer for the end user, a bit tricker for the Pro to set up but harder for the KUI to mess up after.
