Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Been dropped off here a Dual core PC with Vista full of shite incredibly slow, any easy way to reboot it and clean it up without losing data, have not managed to run a virus scan as it is too slow, am slowly deleting crap but there must be a quicker way.

Help me please?

BTW already done a system restore to two months ago.

Stuff a USB stick in and if the flash drive is fast enough a prompt will appear asking if you want to ' speed up my system using windows readyboost' - choose it.
It will only deploy if you have a fast enough USB memory stick. if you don't see the option then your USB stick probably isn't a good'un

Then have a look here
I've recently done this on an old Dell and it flies fine again now.

Cheers Mark, will try that have a good USB stick at hand, as it were

Try this 30 day free trial if you can manage to get to a point where you can install anything.

From Control Panel select "Change Startup Programs" and disable anything that doesn't ship with the operating system. If you don't know the history of the machine you might be surprised (or horrified) at what it shows up.

OK, kind of done that, but what is the definitive list of what is needed?
All seems OK now after hours of feking about Vista really was shite:D

If you have a copy, go to W7, or if not, go back to XP.....Vista was a load of pants anyway.

It's unlikely you'll lose any data as long as you don't chose to format with the install

Would do Bill, but I don' t have any discs, my own computer is on W7 and all I have is a back up image. I almost installed ubuntu at one stage but made it through the horrors of removing programs and 375000 temp files....

there isn't one
if you don't know what it is google it, get an idea of what it is, and remove/disable it
if your really not sure disable just it, make note of what you disabled, restart computer and check what doesn't work, if it all works ok, then it probably wasn't needed
if somethings not working, go back enable, restart, act like nothing happened

This is probably the reason why I'm not a surgeon

free download:thumb2 Spybot Search and Destroy has good utils. for checking out the progs. loading at startup along with other great stuff.

apologies if you already knew that :D

Vista, bag of poo.

Took my net book to Italy with me to copy videos from my gopro onto the hard drive each day. Lost loads of footage because of some error code and time out issue.

Video files just disappeared from cards as they were being transferred. It always seemed to be the bits I really wanted to keep that disappeared arghhhhhhh

There's worse, but not much.

There is only one worse operating system than Vista.
Microshit Millenium.
It crashed at the Microshit unveiling by Bill Gates.

Nothing prepares you for the sheer horror of it.

Best solution to Vista is: "Format C"

Go to XP or 7.
Maybe I am mistaken, but 7 appears to be vista fixed.

XP is still superb.
Hard disks are dirt cheap nowadays.
Buy a big one, and install a new operating system on it.
Afterwards, pop your old drive in a hard disk usb caddy, and copy the files you want off it.
