Voltmeter

I'm fitting a BMW voltmeter to my G/S. Can anyone help as to where I should connect into the wiring loom? Presumably not straight to the battery as this will drain it and therefore should be connecting somewhere into the ignition?

Ok perhaps I'll say what I'm thinking of doing and see if anyone says ....for Gawd's sake no!!!!!!.....

How's about connecting into the rear light circuit?

i wouldent be an expert but if your going to use a light circut why not use a front light circut. I would look for the offical bmw way. Is there a plug on the wire? Why not look for a ingition controled live with a volt meter and use that. JJH

Run the positive lead to any 12V "ignition" source. The best places are from the ignition switch or the fusebox.
Do not wire it directly to the battery because obviously ( as you state ) you will end up with a flat battery If this is the only gauge you're installing, you should install a seperate 5amp fuse. As mentioned by JJH there is usually an OE take off point in the headlamp for guages but these bikes have been around along time so it is a suck it and see solution .

Ok cheers chaps I did want to stay away from the ignition to keep it out in the open rather than cluttered in the instrument housing. But have to open the housing to see why my indicator instrument light is not working so will have a look for any take off there.

The fuse box is a good idea didn't realise it was off the ignition but will get the multimeter out to check.

I think I connected mine to the positive feed to the ignition coil and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems.
