Hi all.

After buying a W reg 1150GS I am interested to know what the problem could be with the ABS.

I have done a search, but there does not appear to be a concise answer to my problem.

Basically, when riding the bike, the 2 ABS warning lights flash alternatively. I have done all of the main checks/resets as described in other ABS posts and nothing has fixed it. When the bike is idle, with each flash of either of the red ABS lights, there is an audiable 'click' eminating from down near the back brake pedal somewhere.

The brakes are working fine, and I have read the user manual but it merely states that this particular light pattern indicates a fault, but it does not say what. It just gives the generic "take it to a registered BMW dealer ASAP" line.

I have read there may be a possibility that the ABS pump is shot? I'm not too worried about the ABS working tbh as I have never needed ABS before now. I would pay to get it fixed, but not if an ABS pump is going to cost an arm and a leg (I have seen figures of over a grand posted on here). I just want the blasted red lights to turn off!! :D

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

stick the battery on charge overnight... could easily be as simple as that.:thumb

a lot of ABS problems can be traced back to the battery... have you tried resetting it after a decent ride with everything else switched off?

Check the condition of the ABS ring and the gap beween pick-up and ring.

I'm a complete novice to mechanical stuff, and the 1150 GS in general. :nenau

Where would I find the ABS ring, and what does the ABS pick up and ring look like? How should it look, and what kind of gap should it have?

Sorry for the complete newbie questions guys. :( I really am clueless!! :nenau

Ah, well, gives me something to learn at least :D :D

You may have a bad or loose contact in the sensor wires.
There is one sensor in front and one in back.

Look for some electric wires coming from front and rear wheel sensors. ( Well never mind the sensors, if you don't know how they look like, just see some electric wires. )

Theck the contact in the wires.

You could waste a lot of money trying this and that.:blast

If you are not mechanically minded I would take it to an independent BMW mechanic for a diagnosis/fix. This will probably save you money in the long run.

Looking at where you live I would recommend Roy Gardner who is a very good independent mechanic just up the M6 from you, near Preston.:thumb

Hope this helps

The ABS ring is on the wheel inside the brake discs. They are a perforated ring of metal and a sensor off the fork on the front of the bike. Check for obvious condition issues, debris, muck etc.

Unfortunatly I dont have ABS  so I cant comment on clearances etc.

And yes, I tried resetting after a 120 mile trip. :)

You need to do some more descriptive explaining.

Explain how your resetting the ABS.

After you've reset it do the two ABS lights flash in sequence when you turn the ignition on ? And do they then flash alternatively once you've ridden off.

Explain the light sequence and events from you turning the ignition on and riding away.
