I've just bought a new top-box and noticed this strange thing beside the lock:

There is nothing on the inside except the nut. This wasn't on my last top-box so what is it for and what function does it fulfill?

I think its an air thingy so that you can open the box without needing a crowbar.

It's a new government initiative.....it's a gps enabled tracking device that will report in automatically as soon as you exceed the speed limit in any particular place by more than 2.07 MPH.

Did the box not come with instructions and a USB lead to plug it in to download the latest speed database? You're obliged to keep it up to date every 2 weeks or else

errrr....this might seem like a sensible but obvious suggestion but why don't you ask the BMW dealer from whom you purchased the top box.

The dealer coded the locks in front of me but I was too interested in what he was doing to inspect the box in detail. After all, it looks like a GSA top-box should so what is there to inspect.

It was only after using the locks to fit it that I saw the bloody thing.

On the comment about it being an air whole to equalize pressure is it solid or hollow and open underneath?

And a bit of info that none of us knew it would appear..............with the exception of Bmmike08 that is..........

OK, just had a better look and it seems that Bmmike08 is right.

Under the bottom of the fitting are two 'nostrils' and just above the nut on the inside is a 1mm hole. Not easy or obvious to see but clearly there. And it was the wide angle lens shot that has produced the angled distortion, the fitting is square and true.

They don't need an airhole!! Have had a pannier and top box set for over 3 years. Sure, in hot weather they lids are not as easy to open but its no big deal. I see the need for an air hole.

Good to see BMW sticking to their usual Mickey-Mouse approach to rectifying problems.

This is going to get interesting as the boxes are marketed as being waterproof (check the catalogue) and warranted as such (I'm on my 3rd set). But BMW are exposing themselves here as they don't state to what degree the boxes are waterproof e.g IPx6 means protected from "Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction".

If it is an air hole, I struggle to see how the box can be waterproof. BM have dug 'em selves an even bigger hole now...
