Wait for the new w/cooled BMW or defect?

Well, after 3 GS's and abut 45K miles and some of the best motorcycling fun of all, I am seriously considering buying the New Triumph Explorer :augie

I went down to a launch evening to have a look and I was quite impressed with the bike and the overall package, and whilst it is not perfect it would make a change.

I have people waiting to buy my twin cam and the dealer knowing this is very keen to strike a deal with some very attractive 'incentives'. This would make the total cost my ownership of the BMW very very good value, but will it be the same for the Triumph:confused:

Decisions, decisions, but what to do :confused: Anyone else in the same boat here?

I can't say that Im in the "same boat" but I test rode the Explorer back-to-back with a TwinCam GS. To be honest I thought that the Explorer was a stonking machine. It had "presence", enough toys, nice riding position, and I (I thought) a great engine. I didnt like the switch-gear (coming from an 1150GSA/BMW), but overall I thought it was very well put together. Watch the "ride by wire" throttle - If you are not aware of it, it's very light and the bike "fly's" if you're not careful accelerating from a roundabout (...I know.:blast), but its something that i would get used to.
Then the T/C GS..I dont know if it was "more of the same" and too similar to my 1150GSA, but the riding position was just "off" - and it felt as if it was "built to a price" - It just (for me) didnt enthrall me to ditch the 1150 and switch to another GS - but the Tr.Ex certainly gave me reason to think.

...Im off to check out the Yam S10 as well...but I think the Tr.Ex will be hard to beat to any newcomer into the "large adventure" type of bikes...

Yep not bad advice and the sort that I would normally say, but like the Versys 1000 - it doesn't appeal to me, nothing you can actually put your finger on. Although I liked the VFR 1200 engine when I rode the bike, the overall package did not 'do it' for me, if you know what I mean..

If you can't decide if the BMW water closet bike is going to be better than the Triumph or, I guess, your current bike..... you may as well wait to find out.

The buyers for your bike will not suddenly vanish. Nor will Triumph's incentives, not least as by the time the WC BMW variant arrives, Triumph will need to drop their prices to fight off the competition, so you'll probably not lose out.

The Honda might still be worth a look, too. I rode the V4 in the new VFR, a very nice engine.

Yes I understand that they do not have the most 'solid' reputation, but I won't be going into KR, he is just so miserable all the time..

Thing is, if I am going to do this it needs to be very soon as I go on my tour of this year at the end of April, so need to buy and run in, first service before the 25th:blast :D

Test ride booked - outline of 'incentives' discussed.......... Face to face delivers more :augie We chatted briefly last night and more on the phone today, but have not got to the stage where he say 'no'. :) Not yet.

Call North City and ask for Ken Kirby. See what he can do for you

I don't know much about KR, they offered me a cracking deal but I bougt my lask bike from North City and they are the Mutts Nutts

I agree Wapping, the buyers won't disappear but I am carving out a very nice package, which will still be available later. But as with all these things, part of it is nothing more than, 'I want', scenario. :augie The best bit of the VFR was the engine, but as I posted at the same time. Couldn't put my finger on it, but just did not do it, too 'Honda' ;)

Nothing wrong with my current GS, it is fantastic, but I could sell and make it cheap motoring for the two years I have had it, before I worry about extended Warranties, re-taxing, servicing etc...........

I have the green light for SWMBO :bounce1 Buyers waiting and the sun is out..... Oh and too much time on my hands.

Lets see if the 'torque' curve is as good as is being made out..

The Triumph is as good as sold :D :beerjug:

Viewed another way, the WC is maybe 18 months off.... give it six months for the inevitable hullabaloo to die off; two years on and the Triumph will will be leaving its warranty period..... Trade it in. Job done.
 
Yes Romford. I've just pinged Ken a message. Your best bet is to try and find a cancelled order. Deposits at the moment are sbject to confirmation after test ride anyway. I haven't done that yet and am due to pick the bike up maybe before Easter. What colour would you be looking for?
 
Trumpet Exploder launch

Saw the the new trumpet Exploder last night (Total Triumph) near Taunton. The food was great... oh yea the new bike was good too. This was my first real look. I only sat on it and my first impression was that it was much softer and heaver than my GS. All looks well made until you get to the shaft drive wow it's humongous:eek:, I see were all the weight is. Triumph are obviously a bit embarrassed as they say "it's purposely over engineered guaranteed not to break like the BMW's" :augie. We shall see. :ronno

But seriously though, there won't be many second hand ones around in 18 months/ two years and if the W/C GS comes out about then there will be loads of GS's hitting the market...................... :augie

So it might be a 'relatively' good move in terms of depreciation...... Test ride tomorrow and a good nights sleep on this......... :cool:
 
I used to say... "If the Japs made anything like a GS".. I'd buy it!..

But that was back in the days when you paid a premium price for a BMW... (and Japanese bikes were a lot cheaper up front)!... but they're not any more!.

I've ridden most if not all of the alternative or comparable offerings to date - bar the Explorer. Which I shall have a go on in the near future!..

However, the one single thing that's kept me firmly astride the GS (now that prices are broadly comparable tween Euro and Japan) is the quirky tele-lever setup!..

Having had GS's for the past 7yrs I've come to love the minimal fork dive experience. Admittedly, not everyone's cup of tea... but for moi "it works"..

So... I will no doubt test ride the Explorer... and maybe like it more than the "others" - but perhaps that's because it looks more like a GS than the others!..

Anyway, I have a feeling that I will return it to the dealer; tell them how nice it is; and continue to remain a tele-lever biaatch!!!

Sooo... For me... The only real temptation to part with my hard earned dosh - for something "the same but different".. is probably the launch of the elusive all new water cooled GS1250!..

That said... The current GS is also v. tempting (I currently have an early 07)
as IMO the NEW motor is significantly better!..
