Wait for the new w/cooled BMW or defect?

OK, just call them then if you want.... I have asked dutchess to let you have my email addy...

Hi,

Just to let you know I have given them a call. I spoke with Ken eventually, and left him with things to think about. He called me this morning, a bit later than he said, but I think they were mulling the numbers over. :augie

They have created a very good impression with me, and I enjoyed chatting with him. Thanks for the tip. :thumb I will have to come to a decision tomorrow, otherwise I will run out of time before I go away to get a new bike run in and serviced etc.

An interesting point though is of course the Triumph warranty is for 24 months but only includes 12 months UK recovery. They want over £100 to extend it for the year for European travel, or typically £32 for say a five day trip. I forgot how mean some are compared to the full BMW 2 year Full Monty warranty and Euro cover.

Whilst not a deal breaker it is something else that has to be factored into the equation, I would obviously buy a better value package elsewhere, but it is going to cost extra. It is a reminder of what is good about the whole GS and BMW package........

interesting thread to read for me as I'm making the decision at moment to go with GS..having never had one been recently a blackbird owner, ive test ridden the versys 1000 and found the front end too vague for me, just didnt feel right, felt too far out there if you know what I mean... Im a shortarse (5'6'' ish) and thought GS would be too big for me but with the lowered setting on a standard seat, two up the bike was one of the best I'd ever riden...just fantastic
The explorer looks a nice bike, not tested yet and may do..but it doesnt have that class that I feel the GS has, for me the daddy would still be the GS. If I did go for a explorer, the blue one looks best...my problem is now I'm certain its a GS for me is I cant decide which bloody colour...

There's only one colour.....................Triple Black.:thumb

My "plan" was to buy a used GS over new to see if I liked these types of bike (coming from Large Sportsbikes) and then get a newer / better one if I did a couple of years later - which is about now :D

I originally considered a switch to the Twin Cam and thought if this coincided with the new WC jobbie there would be plenty around at good money.

My problem with all things GS is reliability, I certainly would not trust a new model from BMW, and to a lesser degree it still seems same old issues (plus a few new ones) haunt the twin cams making them a bad long term bet - expensive to run if you have to pay BMW service rates and buy warranty every year (Or risk the huge costs of a relatively likely major failure)

Anything Jap will almost certainly be pretty good for reliability, the Honda engine is nice and generally Honda's are pretty bullet proof, just hope it rides nice!

The Tenere also looks a safe bet, the Nick Saunders 50k in a few weeks is not something an early 1200GS would have managed without eating several FD's and suffering FPC / EWS issues. I am sure these will do 100k with no bother - plus easy home servicing and dealer rates half that of BMW if you don't want to do the work yourself.

Triumph are a long shot for me, servicing costs are higher and I don't trust them as much as Honda / Yamaha not to have launched a Lemon, or to provide good warranty backup - something BMW do well (but still no good if you plan to keep the bike longer than the warranty period)

I need something that won't depreciate badly if I want to swap again in two years (rules out anything brand new - but leaves room for ex-dem and one stupid owner) and will be viable to keep on the road for 5+ years if I have not got the funds to upgrade again in two years (by which time the Triumph / WC BMW should have proved themselves - or not)

The Versys is a cheapo parts bin special (yet barely any cheaper than a GS)

I think if I could afford a new bike every two years I would just buy a new GS and flog it before the warranty expires or it reaches 20k.

As it stands I reckon I will ride the Triumph and Honda, still prefer the GS and buy a Yamaha for the reliability (Plus plenty around at good money)

Had 4 GSER<S and now on a triple black DOHC, The Japs have a long way to go to convince me,Tele Lever front ends all the way for me,But thats probably coz ma other toy is a Z900(owned for 20 years) and lovingly restored:blagblah:blagblah,An unbeatable Classic superbike,BM all day longgggggggggg:ronno

Took my 2010 GSA in to Allan Jefferies yesterday (Tuesday) for its 18000 service. Speaking to one of the salespeople who informed me that the W/C GSA will not be available un til 2014. It is only the GS in standard form that is coming out in 2013!!:blast:blast

Nothing new there then - same as when the 1200gs was launched in 2004 - the adv version was not released until 2006 ;)

Understood. Likewise I have reasons for not posting my details. :thumb2
