Hi there,
Sold both my Hondas and got my R1200GS a month ago. Only 750 miles so far but no problems, fantastic bike.
What is all this about a waiting list? I picked up mine within a week of walking in the showroom. They gave the cancelled order story. I contacted two other dealers and guess what, I could have a cancelled order in a week. I'm not special so everyone must be able to do the same.
I know there is a lot of talk about battery charging. My dealer said I could use my optimate directly on the battery without disconnecting it. Does anyone know differently as I am still a bit worried about screwing something up.
The cases were fitted at the dealers so the only extras planned are a Hugger and the extended front mudguard, why dont they fit them at the factory? :)

lucky basket!

i have been waiting for mine for nearly 3 months now and my local dealer tells me i should be getting mine in the next couple of weeks or so.

regarding the optimate, i use that for one of my cars and i do not see why u cannot use it for a motorcycle. afterall it is a bog standard 12 volt battery. bloody hell! i need to spend another 40 quid for another optimate!

happy riding in this shitty weather, won't u! :P

Regarding using an Optimate with the battery still connected - the BMW charger has a maximum voltage of 15.5 volts whereas, in desulphinating mode, the Optimate can go up to around 20 volts. The manual tells you to disconnect the battery in order to protect the electronics.

Bummer, I know.

Cos 1200gs' aren't designed to go off road at all???

Yeah, but you don't need to go offroad to get covered in shite !!!:shoot:

But I still love the beast:beerjug: :D :D

Asked this specific question at Ryedales Cardiff and informed it was ok to connect optimate directly to battery without disconnecting the battery first. Apparently Peter the manager had contacted BMW in Germany to check on this and was assured it was ok. Hope it is correct as my battery had discharged completely during one weeks innactivity! Fortunately the Honda which hadn't had an airing for 5-6 weeks started first time.

Thanks master dabber I agree with you. Looks like a trip to the dealer some time soon.

Similar waiting list story too. In fact there wasnt a waiting list at all, I ordered mine at the beginning of September and it arrived from Berlin 5 weeks later. One dealer said I'd have to wait till next year. Must have been mine dealer (Prestige, Bexleyheath) - I was even able to track its production on the BMW Berlin website.
Nice one, Prestige !

Just go ahead and try!

You have two problems:

Problem 1
20 volts may damage the on-board computer. It is not very probable but it may happen.

Problem 2
20 volts will for sure damage the battery! But there are new batteries for sale so what the heck....
