Walking & Riding Gear

Hi All,

I'm a leader with the DofE & this year, instead of using my car, I fancy using the bike whilst supervising.

This normally consists of starting the group(s) off then nipping off ahead, parking up and then walking a mile or 2 to a suitable ambush site & then reading a book whilst waiting for them to get there, then do the same again etc...

I'll have all my camping gear in one pannier, will put my jacket in the other & the helmet in the top box. I'm planning on wearing walking boots instead of bike boots - all good so far!

It's the trousers that are confusing me - I'd like to be able to walk & ride in one set, rather than hopping around getting them on & off. I've narrowed down a couple of pairs I think could be dual purpose, but would be interested to hear your thoughts.

I was looking at these -

BMW Summer Trousers - I'm put off by the fact that the material doesn't actually seem to offer any protection i.e. named "kevlar" or similar.

And these -

Hood Cargo Jeans - Not sure how suitable for walking they are...

Any input or suggestions appreciated!!

If you want somthing to wear on and off the bike and you want waterptoof goretex is the only meterial to go for in my humble opinion. JJH

I'm prepared to put waterproofs on over the trousers if required, but I don't really fancy walking a couple of miles in goretex lined bike trousers on a hot sunny day. Lightweight, quick drying is really what I'm looking for....

Well it depends on what sort of risk you are prepared to take for the event.

Jeans or similar might be sufficient but have little protection whilst on the bike - Kevlar lined might not be suitable for the walking bit.

Quite often, for work, I risk wearing jeans or similar for the commute.

Others will say that it's too risky.

Wear your normal walking gear and don't fall off. Leave you waterproofs in your rucksack unless its raining, in which case put them on.
I suspect you might be over thinking this.

Plenty of folk in warmer climates manage just fine wearing shorts and flip flops. I think you'll be ok.

I've a pair of Summer Trousers (BMW used perhaps once) that I'd be happy to move on.
Outer is labelled Polyamide/Cordura which is certainly protective and even converts to shorts (for the walking bit!)
No good if you're Tosser sized tho'!

Why don't you forget bike trousers and wear walking trousers over a base layer and keep something like Berghaus waterproof over trousers handy? I guess depends on time of year and risk of having an accident. I went on a walking weekend last year and basically wore my walking gear on the bike.

I'm a 32" waist.....

I'm not planning on whizzing around like a loon. I'm in no hurry as the kids are going at walking pace. I always "dress to fall off" though & feel naked in jeans though but I may just have to open a tin of "Man Up" and just wear the walking trousers - unless your Summer Trousers fit??

I still ride in my Levis - what are you trying to say about me????
I do use a material jacket now though to suit all weather.

I know what you mean chalky about feeling naked not wearing padded bike gear...it takes a bit of getting used to.

I'm inclined to agree with AA on this, but you could consider using something like the rev-it air mesh then just carry some waterproof over trousers.

I've got one of the jackets, brilliant for those illusive very hot days when we get them, I just carry a Goretex softshell if it suddenly gets cold or wet.

So, on my trail bike I just wear cordura/lycra (v lightweight & no armour) stuff and feel ok

But because i'm riding a 250kg GS I have to dress like a kevlar stormtrooper, in all the latest hitech safety gear

C'mon get a grip, if you're gonna die then the gear you're wearing probably won't save you - it's the 60mph to zero impact that's gonna mangle your organs to kill you and no leather/rukka suit will save you anyway

Free your mind, wear walking boots and trousers, you'll be fine

Draggin Jeans do a range of Kevlar longjohns and padded tights you can wear under any trousers. K-Legs I think they're called.

Don't forget (mega bucks) Rokker Revolution Jeans, wear like your Levi's do, 100% waterproof and breathable and come with D3O hip and knee armour. Allot of dish but if you want best of both then I wouldn't hesitate as they are thin and lightweight yet have CE level protection and are Swiss engineered (was going to say made, but not certain they are)

I am going to get a pair for myself at some point, as Rukka Armaxion trousers to hot in the summer.

i wear Hood (british made and personally fitted and adjusted if you visit their outlet to buy them (ring ahead first!)) Cargo trousers all the time - black ones... very comfortable. i just take the Armour out for the evenings out for a curry etc. they may be a bit heavy and warm on a very hot day, but i find them ok on most days... a sort of compromise, i think

The BMW trousers have hip & knee armour in them and great they are too.
