So do you need an escort through the country then? Just trying to get an idea of what is involved.

Can you give a rough cost of the carnet?

Thanks a mill....

Have a read of the Iran section on Kevs blog, looks like you need an escort for 400KMS to or from the Pak border.

The carnet is the value of your bike multiplied by a factor, the factor depends on the countries you go to, Egypt is/used to be the most expensive and it went up to times ten... Remember you get the money back when the vehicle gets back...

Therefore for travellers in the real world a ten year old bike in good condition is the best bike to have.... F650 for example.

I have never been to Iran, but have met lots of people who have due to my travels, I have never heard a bad word about the place...

Would love to do the trip overland to India, in fact I am sure I will, but in a jeep as I always travel with my wife and kids...

Yeah, just doing some digging..... I heard reports of Carnets for Iran costing in the thousands so wanted to hear someone's first hand experience. If I was going, it would be on a '84 Tenere so they'd be paying me the Carnet judging by the age of the bike!

Perfect bike for it too. I have met quite a few people in India who have done the trip.
CX500, Dakar, KTM640Adventure etc

The cx500 was in 1990 two up with hand made steel panniers...

Six weeks trip taking it handy a few months taking your time and about two weeks is possible, but pointless IMHO

The half baked plan was to ship the bikes to Turkey and onwards to Mongolia from there over a few weeks..... Through Iran, the Stans and Russia.

Good to have the knowledge about the Carnet for Iran though.

The carnet depends on the value of the moto
the HUBB has plenty about it... now having said
all that... there is a fella i know who managed to get
into Iran without the carnet, he got temp import papers
from customs at crossing (the same papers used by
truck drivers doing deliverys) but it was a pain in the
hole for him to get it. He spent more time at the boarder
running about like a blue arsed fly, he was also heading
to India... he crossed boarder from Iran into Pakistan
and they would not let him ride the moto it was put on to
a train to Lahore, he picked it up in Lahore and got it to
the Indian border crossing 20mins away and the Indian
custom would not let it move any father... he was fecked :blast

Read up a bit on Iran and then head down to Iranain embassy
in Dublin and use your charm you never know what they
may say... ps you'll love the place :thumb

Tell Dorlois i was asking about her :thumb2

I arrived at the Iranian Embassy in Dublin with forms filled out me passport and cash gave them all over to Dorlois at the desk, she takes them off comes back again and says sorry your passport is too badly damaged to issue a visa, told her that I travel by moto and it was only rain damaged but there was nothing she could do. So flew down to the passport office in Dublin told them me problem but they said i needed a long birth cert to get a new passport so phoned me wee bro in Belfast and asked him to find out wat time the place closed at in Belfast to get a long cert, he said they can do a new cert in an hour but I have to be there by 14:30 it was 12:45 in Dublin, but with the love off God got it and flew back down to Dublin. So next morning back top passport office told them me story and God bless them gave me a new passport in two days, so back to Iranian Embassy Dorlois was surprised to see me so soon asked me to take a seat and an hour later i had me visa for Iran 60 days. So now straight over to Pakistan Embassy there visa took 6 days and is for 3 months got then to Indian embassy it took 6 days as well pick it up 20 sept I left Ireland on the 23 sept. It all works out in the end...

Great stuff thanks. Must give the embassy a bell to see how much the carnet is on a 800 quid bike. Need a visa or carnet for any of the other Stans? ( when did you go through Iran so I can have a look at your reports)
