My last serious purchase of anything musically related was a boombox in 1979 :eek

What I'd like now is to have something that can do the following:
  • play cd and digital radio
  • play via my ipad/iphone wirelessly/bluetooth
  • be able to add speakers so I can play music in different 'zones'..dining room, kitchen, conservatory, study etc

Will this Sony CMT SBT 100B - Micro Hi-Fi System with CD/DAB/FM Radio Tuner http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CMT-SBT-100B-System/dp/B00DTTMFP2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3FUVY8M14WOF&coliid=IYNK465HP4FRW do the job or am I looking at something totally different to what I want?

Many thanks :thumb2

This allows streaming of music (signal not sound) from iphone/pad/pod to the unit but from there on to the attached speakers.

True streaming around the house is achieved with stuff such as the Sonos range - check out Richersounds
There are other solutions, I use Roku to get internet radio and pc based music to conservatory.

Thanks - will this sony unit not allow me to add speakers to other parts of the house then?

Depends if it has a second set of outs, if not it is always possible to add speaker switching unit and run cables all over the place.
You would still have to go back to base to change channel volume etc, sonos allows different music in each room or use party mode and have the same signal belt out in all rooms.
Sonos is considerably more expensive but equally offers far more control etc

HTH

That depends on what you already have and intend to keep? As a standalone unit the Sonos Play 5 is superb, Play 3 is very good but not quite in the same sound quality area although you might be hard pressed to tell unless doing a back to back test.

We have a Play 3 in the kitchen and a Sonos Connect running through my old 1980's Technics system in our dining room. At some stage I'll probably swap the Play 3 to the living room and get a Play 1 for the kitchen. Before I bought into Sonos I wanted the ability to play CD's .... now we just use Spotify, my MP3 library and ....... vinyl :thumb2 CD's are now history!

As a starting point it's hard to go wrong with a Sonos Play 3 (or Play 5 if finances will allow). You may need a Sonos Bridge as well but usually one will be bundled free with the Play 3.

All Sonos currently on offer with the bridge (think router to Internet and signal hub) unit

I have 2x play5 and 1x play3

Hard to tell difference, just get bigger one for large rooms :)

All works great. Like the above, I no longer use CDs. Just Internet sourced music/radio

I have about 2 years worth of music in a library on hard disc (NAS) if that bores me but you can get most stuff via spotify and my Saffer mate loves tuning into Durban radio via internet just to hear the news and traffic reports :)

At the moment I just have a sony ipod dock and radio playable through tivo box - so nothing really!

So, the play 3 would allow me to attach several different speakers?

Just bought a Sonos 5 which came with a free Bridge from John Lewis. Great sound quality and you can add speakers in different rooms. Id recommend it:thumb2

Not quite. The sonos kit ARE speakers. If you already own some, they sell a product to hook them in to the wireless network and low them to become "sonos speakers"

you can also do this with apple airport express.

it output's audio to speakers from any apple device using 3.5mm jack, so if you have a music sytem already in a room you can use that

I've just gotten into Sonos kit and am finding it excelent. The Play 1 speaker is the base model, and I have got a pair of them in the living room and they do the job perfectly. I've stuck a Play 1 in my Office and am only heading further down the slippery slope with more when I can afford it. Really well built, rich sound and the ability to play from my NAS, LastFM, TuneIn radio and a multitude of other sources is a bonus.

Play 1's are on offer at the moment at my local TV/ HiFi place, Martin Dawes in Warrington, £153 for the speaker with a Free Bridge. My Daughter is wanting one now to replace her boogie box in her room as she can control the sonos through her iPad mini and have her music in her room. I only really made the decision after reading about Sonos on UKGser, and following it up with some research on AVforums. Sonos would get my vote for what you want to do.

The Sonos Bridge allows you to add speakers and other equipment like the "connect" which allows you to push your TV output or any other existing AV equipment through the Sonos Speakers.

Yes it does.

Basically you connect any one piece of Sonos kit to your WiFi router, then all the Sonos components you have transmit to each other on their own version of WiFi (Sonos Link). If your router is not near to where you want your music, you use a Sonos Bridge which is basically a dumb terminal without the ability to feed to speakers or an amp, this then transmits the other Sonos units.

My 76 year old dad has bought himself a Play 3 and Play 5, subscribed to Spotify and controls it all through his iPad .... and he's a seriously complete techiphobe so it must be simple! It's enabled him to rediscover the music of his youth

I have SONOS PLAY3 & PLAY5's spread around 6 rooms and now I don't bother buying CD's or Digital Music from iTunes. I pay 9.99 a month to Spotify for all the music I could ever want. I can download to my iPhone/iPad so I can take my play lists of music with me when I go away. I totally love this system. I have a SONY & BOSE sound system and 500+ CD's but never bothered to connect it up as I get what I want straight from the SONOS/SPOTIFY setup. I will be buying a couple of PLAY1 for the bathrooms soon. I also treated myself to the SONOS SUB for the lounge, expensive but adds a new dimension to the sound quality.

SONOS customer care is pretty dam slick too. I picked up most of my system in the UK but live in France. I forgot about the power cables being different and not wanting to cut them up and put french plugs on, I emailed SONOS to enquire about buying 5 French leads. SONOS customer service came back to me in under 10 minutes saying they would post them out to me free of charge!! Cables arrived 48 hours later. Then I got a follow up call from them to ask if everything was OK and could they help with anything else. SONOS is an expensive product so you expect good care, and that is exactly what I got.
