Want to update R2 with new maps

I've had my Rider2 for a while now, but lately I've been riding through a few too many fields (according to the old mapping - ie, roads it doesn't know about).

Yeah, I would very much like a slightly bigger and brighter screen of the R5 - but it works well enough, so plan to buy new mapping for this one.

TT Home warns me that a 2GB card won't do. I have read that some folk have successfully used a single 4GB card. Others not so much.

Any views / experience, please? Again, happy enough to update, but not to piddle about swapping memory cards at borders!

I have the Tomtom Urban European and I subscribe to the TomTom map update service. I receive 4 new maps per year, split into zones, I find Western Europe covers 99% of my needs without any hassle, if I need to change zones I hook up to my Netbook with TomTom Home to change zones.
Works really well..

Mine is a bit older than yours and has a removable memory card.
I don't mind paying a one-off fee to update, but I just want it to be like it is now -ie not swapping cards to and fro. If this isn't possible, I'll stay as I am for a few more years, then bin the device (it seems they're meant to disposable).

I may be a bit late but....

I think you can use 4GB but it must NOT be an SDHC card - just an original SD card - they can be found but are pretty rare - I found this link if it helps.

I've got a 4GB SDHC card in my TomTom Rider V2 and have had no issues with it.
I copied the original card on my laptop onto the new card and then put it into the TomTom and all was fine.

I have a 4GB SDHC card in my R2 with no problems. AIUI the only issue is that you *must* update the firmware on your TomTom to 7.901 or later before you attempt to use the larger card.

So what you do is update the firmware (with the old 2GB card in the slot) and reboot. Only then should you copy the contents of the old card to the shiny new one. At this stage you'll probably find that the TT will no longer recognise the old version of the maps (due to copy protection tying them to a particular card/installation). Plug the thing into TT Home and let it download and install the maps and you should be good to go.

With the Rider 2, 4GB is as big as you can go. My (limited) understanding is that the few non-HC 4GB cards that are on the market don't comply fully with the SD card standards (because there is a designed-in limit of 2GB on SD cards) - they are in effect some sort of "in-between" "not-quite-SDHC" product, which may or may not work. But as I mentioned, a proper SDHC card (provided it's no bigger than 4GB and provided the Rider has up-to-date software) will work fine.

If only the poxy charging docks were as reliable...
