Looking to wrap some vulnerable motorbike body panels in a clear vinyl.
Was wondering if anyone had tried doing this and if they can recommend where or what make of clear vinyl to buy ?

Look up vehicle wrapping on google - bound to find someone local.

You might even find someone who works there - who will do bike panels/panniers for beer money

I am looking at getting my head protectors vinyl wrapped with carbon fibre vinyl. Going to see a vinyl wrapper this week to discuss any issues such as heat etc. Jav of this parish has kindly photoshopped an example of what it may look like. As this:

I was going to apply the clear vinyl myself so I am not looking for a shop to do it for me.
Has anyone tried this and what did you use ?

Not used it but oxford products do a clear wrap.

Contact Phil at "TINTINIT" on Thruxton airfield industrial park... VERY Helpful to us tossers.

He supplied me with vinyl to wrap my panniers and the know how to do a decorative partial wrap on my bike

Lots of us cyclists use 3M "helicopter tape" - lots on ebay.
It's used mostly in high rub-areas (such as where a cable chafes against the frame, or where your boot touches the frame).
Mostly for smallish high-wear areas rather than covering a whole panel...

I see some people use it above car wheel arches to stop stone chips too:

Hi OldCroc. I like your head protectors. I'm not sure I want the bars for my 1250, these look a lot neater and the carbon wrap is great. Could you advise where I can obtain the same head protectors please. John

Bear in mind that the 1250 requires different head protectors to earlier models. I use the X-Head ones on mine and am pleased with them, though hope not to be properly testing them!

Here's a picture of mine fitted to my RS:

I used several manufacturers when I was learning, but just go for 3M vinyl . On my old 1200GSA virtually every panel was covered including the cowling around the radiators. After a couple of years the “extra” vinyl on the back of the panels became a little brittle due the the heat in some areas, but still looked great on the show side. The downside was that when I traded the bike, the dealer wanted it “back to original” in every way. All the mods came off, including the wrap. The bike looked pristine as the wrap had protected it brilliantly, it was in showroom condition.

There is an older 3M vinyl called Di-NOC which I tried but it was nothing as good as the 3M Scotchprint. There is an embossed feel to it and it’s easy to use. Get a good heat applicators and start simple.

Clear protection. I used InvisiShield on the hard bits including the tank and covers. This came in a pre-cut kit and took less than an hour to protect virtually all the bike. The dealer won’t be asking for that to be removed this time as it is invisible.

I’d only tackle the low radius curve areas again. The complex compound curves around the cowls takes a disproportionate amount of effort. Done well it can look brilliant. Carbon fibre wrap gives a dramatic effect, particularly if you’re careful to “match the grain” and use different angles on adjacent panels.

Over the years, I have had two R1200RTs, a little Yamaha, and two Audis clear-vinyl-wrapped by someone local to you. His name is Matt Hedger and his company is Airstream in Chigwell . He is a real guru and will make any pieces of extra wrap that you need (that might not be in the standard kit).

He is friendly and will make you endless cups of tea while he wraps your bike. If you work in London, he will take give you a lift to the nearest Tube station.

Tell him that I sent you.

Edit: I have just noticed that you want to apply the wrap yourself. I'm sure that Matt will sell you a kit, but for what he charges and the longevity of his work, I feel it is not worth it. A full - and I mean full - kit for a 1200RT LC is almost £200 (painted panniers etc.). If a piece doesn't go on perfectly, he goes upstairs to cut another.

When the wrap came off after trading the previous bike at a dealer, the bodywork looked in showroom condition.

The picture i posted up is just photoshopped. I am going to see if I can find someone local in Lincoln to do the wrapping. I also plan to do the small rear tank panels as well just to carry the carbon theme on. I will also look for a wrap with a closer carbon weave than that in the picture.

I have had the head protectors and a tank panel wrapped now. With the block power coated cylinder heads is looking ok I think.
