Hi All,

My Secdem screen arrived from Norman yesterday, and I am being a good boy and leaving the parts in the box until such time as I can get all the proper tools to fit it on a sunny day.

[fx: crosses fingers for saturday]

Has anyone any advice, tricks & tips regarding getting the old screen off in a least-hassle, no-damage manner?

Anything especially to look for in trying to fit the new one?

Many thanks!

It's pretty simple:

1) remove the chrome domed locknuts on the inside of the rear mounts using a suitable spanner. DONT drop them as they vanish into thin air.

2) loosen the knurled rear mounting bolts. Take care as there is another shaped slotted bolt on the inside of the mount which slots into the vertical adjustment slot of the mount. As you loosen the knurled nut, ensure that you keep your finger on this nut - easiest is to push the knurled bolt in as you loosen it so the nut is easier for you to grab onto. Dont drop it as it will vanish as the domed nuts in 1:

3) your rear mounts are now free

4) use a v.small torx (star) key to remove the front mounting bolts. Dont lose them as you'll need them again.

5) remove the screen. Use a prodding type tool to separate the two halves of the black plastic moulded bits with the serrated inner edge on the rear sides of the screen. Best way is to prod the outer one from the inside of the inner one and it'll pop out quite easily. Note that they are "sided" so remember to put the right hand ones back on the right side of the new screen. They have a little "R" and "L" stamped on them too.

6) replacement is the reverse of removal.

Note that you may want to wrap some tape around the front mounting pins where they go into the mounting tube. PTFE tape is ideal. Insulating tape is a bit thick but does work. Why do this? It stops the pins vibrating and getting loose, after which they then rattle like a wrecked small end bearing :D

Cheers

You'll need to remove the plastic rear mounts from the stock screen and fit them to the new screen. Be aware that they are not interchangeable, but both halves are marked either 'R' or 'L' for those who get them mixed up!

Excellent guys, thanks; the thing I was most concerned about was/is getting the domed locknuts off; I presume they're not tightly torqued?

Nope - stuff a spanner in there and they come off easily.
