Not sure if this section can be used for a wanted ad but I’m sure I’ll be advised..

Anyway, I’ve been on the lookout for a black leather 50‘s style jacket for about 4 months now with no joy, the style I am after is quite particular it’s the one that zips up diagonally so it doesn’t scratch the tank, I’m sure you all know the one, and WITHOUT belt. I don’t really want to buy a new one as it would look, well, new! I’ve been looking at Caine leather, Goldtop, both of which sell the jackets I’m after, but they are made in Pakistan, I wanted a UK made product, both of these are c£250, and when I look at Lewis Leathers (made in UK) the same jacket is £1200! It surely can’t be that much more expensive to make in this country, taking into account import costs/duties etc can it?

Anyway, I’m putting it out there on here in case anyone has what I’m after lurking in their wardrobe…

Size wise I am a 44/46”chest and 5’ 9” tall, weigh around 15 stone. Anyone got anything suitable or ideas as to where I might get one?

Steve.

I have a Vanson Cobra jacket you might like. It’s size 46 with a couple of scuffs. I’m in London right now, but home for the Moffat trip later in the month. Looks like this, but not vented.

Thanks for the reply, good looking jacket but I am after the style with a diagonal zip? May consider yours though…

Aero leather, eBay. Join Fedora Lounge for the most nerdy leather jacket site on the planet. Loads of info about leather quality and size.

For the look, quality Vanson is great. Look out for California Highway Patrol jackets on eBay.
BKS made to measure Police jacket is like a tank. Like this one with the CE label.
Cheap as chips. Snap up a suit for £60, looking at £1800 for a new one.
He sometimes has specials.
Don’t forget Schott, not much cash. Must have the label made in USA. Ask for measurements

Aero does some amazing stuff. In horse hide. See some second hand or apprenticeship work. This is mine. Leather is almost 2mm thick.

Why does a diagonal zip not scratch the tank ?
I only ask as I scratched a tank a while ago wearing a leather jacket but I cannot remember if it was a straight or a diagonal zip.
And as a PS - I've been looking for similar jacket (any zip) for a while and have drawn a blank to date but I am looking in the cheap as chips price range.

On that type of jacket the buckle will do more damage than the zipper.
Belstaff cover the hardware.

I wonder, maybe, possibly, if it was buckle damage in my instance.
Apologies for the interruption young smudger, back to your initial request now.

Sorry Smudger, I can’t really assist.

Ebay is probably where you'll pick up what you are looking for at a reasonable price but be aware that searching for a well known branded jacket like Lewis Leathers means that the seller knows what they have and the value of it, so try searching foe black motorcycle jacket and be prepared to trawl through, you might be surprised.

There’s a guy at Kempton Auto jumble who specialises in Rocker memorabilia, inc jackets, his stall is always inside nr the loos.

Goldtop really is quality stuff, based in Bishop’s Stortford.

Lewis leathers is also top quality stuff, they have a store is in Central London, but the prices reflect what the Japanese and Chinese are prepared to pay.

As you say, folks want old rather than new.

Good luck with the hunt.

It depends what you want..Gold Top make a great jacket fits well, looks the business, with a waxed moustache and a 719 option R 9T..The leather is VERY soft pelle leather and wouldn’t last very long in an off; I lightly caught mine walking through a door and tore it..🥲

Gold Top..BKS..Belstaff..All brand names sold from the old days when I remember them, and not of the same quality.

MW leathers gone (my first tailor made suit)..Crowtree were excellent, do they still exist..Lewis leathers I remember from their first shop in Leytonstone Road, London where I bought my first ever jacket, now appear to have a shop in Central London, and quality seems 👌 but not cheap.

IMO If you want a proper motorcycle jacket Fox Creek or Vanson..If you want to look cool at the Bike Shed probably Gold Top or Lewis..Davida did a good quality replica at one time also.

I’ve got a Belstaff cafe racer style, but brown not black and normal zip, if you give up on the perfect spec.

Weighs a ton, but looks good!

I love my belstaff leather jacket…. They no longer make that style!

Have MW leather trousers ( and vented ones) tailor made for me by Mike as I have a shortened femur on one side due to an accident….so standard leathers wouldn’t be any good.
Thankfully I didnt have to pay for them, and they still have years /miles of life in them.

OP. Also consider Hideout leathers… UK made.

Sent you a PM for a heavy weight Weiss jacket that ticks all your boxes

Jim

I think I have a genuine Lewis leather jacket that may do the job but it is dark blue. Message me if interested and I'll get some pictures and details to you.
