Wanted: Cheap GPS for emergency use

I'm after a cheap & cheerful GPS that takes standard batteries to be kept in my panniers for emergency use. All I want is something that I can power up to get an OS map reference. Ideally I'm looking for something like a Garmin GPS II or 12XL but an older Magellan might do the trick as well.

Anyone have anything gathering dust at the bottom of a drawer that they don't use any more and would be willing to sell for a small price?

Interesting thread. Mapping isn't an issue, as I just want it to get a map reference, but it's nice to know I could use the data cable and upload
waypoints and a route.

I have a magellen "handheld" sport trak map which I used to use for green laning, 'til I fell off and cracked the egde of the screen!!! It still works fine but is now not waterproof and is gathering dust in my garage as we speak. I guess this might be just what you need for grid ref and has a very basic map as well... Is it worth a tenner plus post???? pm me if you are interested.john (or 07837 869361)

Go for an eTrex .. they are waterporoof - can link to a PC and the batteries last up to 18 hours. I use one as emergency back up to my Quest , and before that used it for green laning , hiking and mountain biking.

I have used it to call in a puncture on a remote B-Road to the RAC.

Good tools.

I got the Sportrak Map now from russ996duke. It fits the bill perfectly. Standard batteries and waterproof (like the eTrex). I can ride my own bike and, more importantly, the blood bike knowing that if I get into trouble I can at least give the emergency services an accurate OSGB reference.

Just don't keep the batteries *in* it, lest they go off keeping the memory on tickover.
