Following the recent departure of my RHS exhaust valve I'm rebuilding that side. I'm assuming the piston isn't supposed to look like the one below..

Looking for a right hand side silver cylinder head, piston and barrel for an '04 plate R1200 GS.

Must be good condition as regards corrosion. Cash waiting!

Nope But in a way you are lucky I had to take the engine out and dig the missing bits out of this one

N.B. CHECK THE LAMDA PROBE FOR DAMAGE mine was running way out until I fitted a new used one

What was the cause of these failures ? I ask because there is a thought that it is caused by a weak running engine... but looking at the piston top of one and the valves/piston of the other none of the two looks as though they were running weak? Was it oil starvation or just a badly made valve that broke ?

My mates got an engine he's going to split pm me on Saturday morning to remind me to all and see him

Motor works and James Sherlock regularly break bikes for parts.

Or you could buy from eBay (and risk sponsoring bike theft).

Lots of almost new parts seem to readily available from places like Lithuania lately?

Being rebuilt this week by Matt Dix from MAD Services, Hartfield after I managed to track down a head, barrel and piston in immaculate condition. Should be running again this weekend fingers crossed... Pictures forthcoming...

:beerjug:.....good luck and keep us posted :thumby:

What state are the valve collets on the failed valve stem? A recent thread on Advrider showed stretched valve collets caught just before the engine let go. A lucky owner.

Well it's all fixed and running again! :clap

The hardest bit was finding a cylinder head, barrel and piston in good condition. My bike is in immaculate condition as regards corrosion and all the dealers I phoned described the ones they were selling as "Scabby"!

Anyway I tracked down one in lovely condition, no corrosion and off an '07 bike.

The gudgeon pin had a ding in it and needed replacing and the piston was cracked right through so ended up replacing the Piston, Gudegeon Pin, Barrel, and Cylinder head and elected to keep the existing valves as they all looked immaculate.

Interestingly the bike seems a lot smoother now and a lot less vibey than it ever was so I wonder whether the rogue exhaust valve was seating properly previously. It also sounds a lot throatier now as well so maybe it's compressing properly?

Either way I'm very happy with it for the moment so the KTM may have to wait for a while....:thumb2:D
