Arrived outside shop yesterday and put sidestand down and lent the bike over..... and it kept going over! After picking up bike off the floor the I found that the sidestand shaft had broken clean off the top where it is bolted to the frame. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I'm off around the Alps in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone had a spare sidestand I could purchase? I will try Motorworks for a secondhand one tomorrow, any other suggestions where I may be able to find an alternative source for good secondhand parts would be appreciated. Thanks

could you not get it welded ?

They tend to snap at the weld and bend so it's quicker to replace them. On the 1100 they were replaced with a newer one designed for the last years production run.

Happened to me while I was taking a "comfort break" behind a bush in a lay-by... what a dilemma stop having a pee or rush to save the bike... the bike was easier to stand up than I thought ;)

:D

I would have thought if it was plugged and welded it would be as strong if not stronger than the original ? and if it snapped at the weld, well it was only welded in the first place so wouldn't it being rewelded not just put it back to the original state ?

I take it you're talking about the side stand plate that the side stand attaches to and not the actual side stand itself - yes, it's quite common. A new side stand plate costs about £60..

A quick update whilst in Austria, the Motoworks stand was the wrong one, sent it back. Got old one welded up, brilliant job but does not sort out the fact it leans too far over as it's too short. Had an inch and a quarter puck made up with a plastic sidestand spreader screwed into it and I lower it into place before getting off bike but only necessary when I'm touring with full luggage and tail pack on rear seat platform. Sorted. Chap that did the welding said he'd make up a 'solid one' instead of tubular, maybe he'd make it an inch and a quarter longer too, as long as it does not interfere with it's retraction.
ps. just removed a chunk from the foot of the sidestand going up and down the Gerlos pass *Austria..... oops.:D
