Bike wouldn't start on Tuesday so I ordered a new battery. Battery now fitted and all we get is a "Clunk" when starter button. Mechanic thinks it's the starter motor. :blast . So as BMW want to take a mortgage on my home for a new one  Where do you get yours from ? Thanks.

Just researching the self same, this very minute

Do I get a cheap £60 ebay one or just get a new Valeo from Motorworks for £180?

the HC Cargo is a known brand at £73 although is it any better than a chinese unknown ?
who knows only time will tell

I researched it too, from memory Steptoe fits the cheap ebay ones and is perfectly happy and he has fitted more than anyone.

would I fit a £180 Valeo or an old one refurbed ?
No

No

Problem HC Cargo are out of stock

Are you sure its the starter motor?

Have you tested the starter motor from a direct 12V source? That clunking sound, sounds like the solenoid, have you checked all the connections around the headstock especially the earth connectors?

I am only trying to help here and save you a potential expensive outlay, I am sure someone much wiser (and there are thousands of them!) will be along in a minute to offer a more expert assessment.

Just bought a new oem Valeo from Motobins for £175 delivered (£10 cheaper than Motorworks)

Even some suppliers/distributers were giving mixed vibes about some of the Chinese made ones they were selling, some were not complimentary (mainly suppliers selling them in the auto electrics sector) so went with another Valeo - as it's done 15 years of faultless service and I may well try a rebuild over winter and keep as a spare

I've fitted plenty of the chinese starter motors ( i don't sell them, the customer supplies their own) and never had or heard any problems reported back from the owners.
They used to be about £40 each but prices have increased a lot over the last year.

The cases are slightly thinner but i've never heard of one breaking on an 1100/1150 - But the 1200 versions are a different matter entirely. :D
