Wapping's Wanders Three - Dijon - 15 July to 20 July

Ah, news of parts from foreign parts. Good to hear that it is on the way to being sorted.

Today (or Toady, as it might be spelt) we were reduced from 7 to 6 to 5 to four, as monsieur Toad bailed out early to visit the dentist... He also very nearly bailed out early and permanently by driving headlong towards a lorry..... En France sur droit, having been temporarily set aside in favour of Novacain and la drill........

Wapping, how the he'll do you ride that bike so fast ??
A bit off-topic, but if you have a minute...

As a possible future Wapping's Wanderer I'm wondering how much progress you do make on these trips, are we talking straight line speed or cornering speed here? Mine's an '82 R100RS, which I do think would be quite comfortable at 90mph all day, but having to keep up with an exuberant K1600 would be asking a lot of it. I would hate to be a burden, obviously. What other bikes come on your trips?

Pace tends to be dictated by those in the group - Wapping certainly doesn't mind whether this is 100 mph or 50 mph.

On this trip we've had Wapping on his time machine, and 4 1200s. There was a Buell, but it ran out of alternator.

OK - Time to get packed up for the trip home.

Richard it certainly sounds like the Wanderers went Wandering. Sorry to hear that rotten luck has reared its ugly head.

Hi John,

No worries about the pace at all.

On the Dijon jaunt there was more often than not just the four or five of us, so we could all crack along at a reasonably fair lick where it was safe to do so. Nobody got left behind at all. With just a small group we didn't have to run the marker system, if we got split up those at front simply waited or slowed a bit until the headlights appeared and we gathered ourselves together again. I don't think we ever waited more than about 30 seconds. Similarly, on any major deviation or turn off we slowed and / or waited.

I will, I promise, adjust the pace to suit everyone and am happy to run the marker drop off system for a small, a medium or large group as required. The idea of the jaunts is to have some fun and a bit of craic not get lost or go into a hedge.

On the assorted 'Wanders' we have had a complete mixture of bods, bikes, solo and pillions, beginners and seasoned campaigners. Touch wood, we have never lost anybody........ other that is than the spectacular bomb burst on the Agincourt jaunt at the very difficult roundabout over the St Omer ringroad. Here, we lost about 15 bikes in about 50 meters, ending up with just me and NCPierce, my back marker. Everyone in-between had vanished into the black hole of France.

It's an amateur holiday and holidays are meant to be fun. If someone feels too pushed then it's not fun for them and it can get dangerous very quickly. That is NOT the intention, so things have to be changed to suit them and EVERYONE still have a good time together. That is all that I want and all that I can hope for, each and every time. I would rather go slower to suit one bod than faster to suit two or more.

By all means PM me to have a chat or contact any of the past or present 'Wanderers' (the names of everyone are in the individual threads' roll calls) if you want an independent second opinion. It would be great to have you along some time.

Richard

Message to Dakar

Hi Dave,

Back home now.

It was a pleasure to meet you.

I said to all the guys that it was so unfair that your bike failed. I told all the 'Wanderers' that your enthusiasm for the jaunt (and a preparedness to come all the way from Ireland) was infectious from your posts in the thread / PM's and from your first and early arrival at the Chunnel.... Nobody could disagree with me, nor did they need to.

Hope to see you again..... I will always hold (or create) a space for you on any future 'Wander' that may take your fancy. That's a promise.

Best wishes,

Richard

Thanks to Richard and all the guys on the trip for a great few days.

I got back in one belt last night – through the door just before 10pm – 650 miles total. Pissing wet through on the M25 and then again near York but otherwise a good run.

Please forgive the fact that I have not yet sorted image hosting – so I will do a series of posts to attach the images.

Delighted to hear that Dakar Dave got back safely. A really nice guy and a pleasure to meet. Absolute bummer that his Buell packed up. The photo shows his cheery disposition as he was ringing for the recovery service !

Great to meet Graeme – excellent company. Appears to be mister sensible most of the time – then leaps of his bike in a Dijon traffic jam to shake hands with a pretty girl at a bus-stop. Only down-side was a habit of chucking drinks over the person opposite.

Mark – good fun. Complete adrenaline junky. Got bored going through villages so practised riding with one hand and one foot on the bike - it was like following a circus pony act !

Richard’s timing was amazing. We managed to miss almost all of the rain that was around. Almost every time we stopped for a meal or coffee, the heavens would open and then stop again by the time we wanted to ride.

Photo shows quick stop for a beer before dinner – rain started just after we arrived and had stopped 5 mins later.

I have never seen so much kit on a bike. Seven RAM mounts!! The cockpit looked like mission control. He also had a strange gimballed can holder attached that we decided would look better full.
