A particular interest of mine are the many hundreds of different war memorials. One of the most evocative is at Steeple Morden, near Royston, dedicated to the 355th Fighter Group of the USAAF.

Here is the Memorial

Yes, the Snetterton memorial (next to the ticket gate) is superb!

I am becoming increasingly interested in The Cross of Sacrifice:

The cross was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield who wrote:

"What I wanted to do in designing this Cross was to make it as abstract and impersonal as I could, to free it from any associations with any particular style, and, above all, to keep clear of any of the sentimentalities of Gothic. This was a man’s war far too terrible for any fripperies, and I hoped to get within range of the infinite in this symbol of the ideals of those who had gone out to die. The bronze sword is there to identify it with war - and also there kept ringing in my head that text, ‘I came not to bring peace but a sword’. I never expected the bronze sword to be passed, but the late Archbishop of Canterbury was a wise and tolerant man, and the heads of all the churches accepted the design … I took immense pains with the design, working it out on a carefully adjusted system of proportions so that in the four sizes in use the relative proportions of the design were maintained. The Cross has been set up in all the War Cemeteries throughout the Empire. It has also been adopted in many places in England as the local War Memorial ... "

Blomfield was a pupil at my daughter's school and, perhaps unsurprisingly, an example of the Cross appears there. But here it sits in the shadow of a wonderous Chapel designed by Sir Charles Blomfield, Sir Reginald's uncle.

Twotter (Rob),
The one at Steeple Morden is at the top of my list:thumb2

Is that lump of red granite in front of it new?
What is written on it?
Mike.
