Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice here,

just bought a nearly new 1200gs and have just noticed that the rear disc is very slightly out of shape, ie if i set the bike on the centrestand and spin the wheel it will rotate a certain way round and then stop.

Like i say it is a slight warp and doesnt seem to affect the handling/braking but my concern is that a slight imbalance may damage the swingarm.

No idea how the disc would have become like this as the bike hasnt been dropped and would need a direct hit on the disc to bend it.

I doubt this would be a warranty job and im loathed to go near the dealer till i get a bit of info from yourselvesie should i get it replaced immediately or not be too concerned at this stage.

Cheers folks

If your bike is under warranty, don't hesitate to get it checked out at the dealer.

Is there any play in the final drive? Apparently this can have the knock on effect of warping the rear disc. Both will be warranty issues, I'm sure.

as yet there is no play in the final drive but that is my concern, ie that the slight warp might cause further damage. The bike still has about 22 months warranty left so i guess i should take it to the dealers to see what they say. Its too big a chance to take not to i suppose.

Cheers for the advice guys.

Just phoned the local (one and only) bmw garage. The service bloke tells me that unless i can feel juddering in the back brake then i have nothing to worry about, mmm. Also tells me that it may be due to the back brake being gummed up and the caliper not releasing properly, but surely then it would stick the whole way round?? And it cant be salt as he suggested as the roads havent been salted since the bike was new.

Not too sure about that but i will keep an eye on things to see what happens. Service bloke tells me to bring it in if it gets worse. I hate to think that i am going to ride on and do serious damage.

Thanks again folks.

Are you sure it's the disc that's out of shape? If you set the bike on the centrestand and spin the wheel, can you see the disc "wobble"? Even better, can you get it checked with a dial gauge?

At the very least, it wouldn't hurt to give your rear brake caliper a clean, in case the pads are binding a bit.

Just had all my discs replaced under warranty. Only had a judder from the front but technician said rear was warped as well.

I took my 1200GS over to the Dolomites for two and half weeks. Great time but on the way home I could smell what seemed to be the clutch cooking. Anyway when I got back i took to my dealer and he had a check and test ride and said that the back disc was knackered. Apparently it had been binding slightly and the disc overheated making it blue and brittle. He checked it out on the plug in computer thingy and it confirmed that the rear brake was out of adjustment and had rubbed on the disc. They replaced it all under warranty.

Hi Mouse

When you say clean the brakes........what do you mean i.e what (apart from blowing through with an air house) would you suggest. Remove pads and copper slip the rear of the pads and grease the pins?.

Have tried search engine on the site, but nothing found. Any other tips greatly received.

Thanks

My rear disc is being replaced under warranty next week ...saying that I am getting a judder from the front discs as well - will need to raise it with them next week...
