Hi,

I bought a new 1150 GSA SE from SPC over the xmas vacation, Great bike. They said the bike had 2 years warranty and 1 year break down cover!! I have phoned the BMW hotline to check and my bike actually has no brake down cover.

Phoned SPC and I am now told that I do not have brake down cover because the bike is an import, although I do have the 2 years warranty!

I guess I will now need to purchase my own brake down cover - just in case!!

Does anybody know how this works - i.e., I am out riding my bike and the engine goes, which would be covered under warranty. Am I left stranded until I can get the bike to a BMW garage for them to do the warranty work? If I purchase my own brake down cover then they would take me to the nearest garage, which wouldn't necessarily be a BMW garage - I'd be stuck again.

I very much doubt the bike will brake down but I need to have a bit of 'peice of mind', which is 1 of the reasons I bought a Beemer in the first place. I also plan on going to Northcape in the summer.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

You need breakdown cover with get you to your destination option e.g. AA Relay.

Who is your insurer? Some insurers throw it in for free e.g. Carole Nash and eBikeInsurance (although that is UK only)

I think you have a case for getting SPC to provide you with a year's free BMW Assist. If they sold it to you they should give it to you. I'm sure you could get a small claims court to side with you for misrepresentation. Do you have legal cover with your bike or household insurance? Might be worth a quick call to the helpline.

Got my gs from SPC, they told me all imports come with the full remain warranty but no breakdown.

Also the bike will not be on the bm computer in the UK, so select the garage you will use and register with them, and then they will have all your details to hand.

I would be inclined to hold SPC to their original statement. If they sold the bike as new how can it differ from others in law, they are all imports!

I also brought a 1150 SE from SPC just before xmas. I was told that my bike is full UK spec  . I still wasn't sure so before I finalised the deal I rang BMW in Bracknell just to make sure. They said the bike was on their system and appeared fine.

I take it of the 4 SEs they had in there, 3 were imports (Dutch? German?) I dunno :nenau .
I hope you get it sorted mate.

Thanks all.

Moo Moo, All the SE's were imported. The original 90 UK models were sold long ago!

If you bought your's just before Xmas then you must have an import!

Mine is an import but with full UK spec and UK registration plate. SPC also gave me the original papers from Germany and from the DVLA, which showed that the bike had been converted to UK spec. Did you get this from SPC?

I would be very interested to know if your bike is covered under the BMW assistance. You can call them freephone 24hrs a day, the number is on your key ring. If you do call them, let me know the outcome.

I am not confused, SPC definately told me that the bike had breakdown cover. I specifically remember him stating that I just call the number on the key ring if I have any problems!

Cheers
Dean.

I was told that the bike I have was ordered by a customer who was on a trip from Alaska all the way through South America. He got as far as Peru and broke his leg, hence airlifted back to UK. He would't be fit for another 4 months so he now want's an 1200 ADV. Dunno if this is all bullshit?

Anyway I have no DVLA stuff saying its an import, I recieved a little silver credit card thingy from BMW with a letter whch included the paragraph below.

'One of the benefits of buying a new BMW motorcycle is that you are provided with 2 years BMW Emergencey Service which offers you the reassurance of comprhensive cover both in the UK and throughout Europe. Please see your Warranty and Emergencey Service handbook for details.`

Did you get this letter and card?

It came via BMW warranty services who are based in Hook, Hampshire.

Hope this helps

Your obviously sorted.

On a more positive note. There an absolutely ace bike aren't they.

Cheers.

No, that won't be bullshit... I know who the unlucky guy is... fortunately his dad made it all the way down to Ushuaia - Tierra del Fuego. It was a really nasty accident.

Have a look here and read on down near the bottom.

I'm sure I read that "ALL BWM bikes sold in the UK come with 12 months breakdown cover". That statement doesn't therefore exclude imports if bought from a UK BWM dealer then does it? If the dealer also sold it to you as being covered, then that dealer must surely be legally bound to ensure it does so. Go back to them and explain calmly that if the cover is not supplied as promised during the sale agreement, it was sold under false representation, and see what happens.

I bought my 1150 GS from SPC. Had the first service done by CW of Dorchester, THEY arranged the breakdown cover for me with BMW :clap :bounce1 :bow

FWIW I bought an R12GS in Germany, fully Headlight and Speedo converted, and it Broke :spitfire after six months. Phoned Assistance and gave Vin no. and within 2 hours, fixed. Told that because BWM make thes machines in Deutchland and they are ''''Exported''' to all over the World they are mostly Imported. What are these Dickheads on about, the Warranty is World Wide, if they build a crap machinen, it's crap everywhere for crying out loud. Jump on their beanbag, espescially SPC the so called Importers, they Import ALL BWM's for goodness sake.

From previous experience I learnt that the warranty starts from the date the bike was first registered, therefore, as all "imports" are used bikes the warranty would have started from the date it was registered in Germany or whatever Country it came from and not from the date first registered in the UK, simple but costly trap to fall in to.

Secondly, the emergency cover is in addition to the factory warranty but is issued by the distributor to bikes they sell through their dealer network.
