Before the arguments start.

The manual states: SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2

No other temp ranges or other grades are mentioned. API SL is the latest and current spec.

So 5W-40 API SL it is, no quibbles :D

ah - another impossible to find motorcycle oil grade :nenau

I'm sure Castrol will do it for BMW at £30 a litre

Ehm Parn me Doff's Cap

But It is well worth Asking/mentioning this is a Wet clutch in the WaterCloset version innit??

Therefore strongly suggest nearest equivalent of CAR type 5W40 will NOT do!

Says he who discovered the hard way in the Ducatti 600SS which had a wet clutch whilst the recommendation of fully synth wotsit was for a dry clutch version usually of more cc's and horsepower

Clutch slipped like a bugger when warm but once foreman slapped me head and told me I just drained the oil, changed filter and topped up with proper M'cycle 10W40

Yep a wet clutch, so DONT use car oil - you could get away with it in the older boxers but not the new one!!!

Hooray, an oil thread at last:D I bought a litre yesterday at the first service from Vines, and they said that when this litre is used, keep the bottle, and the next one and any others will be half price:beerjug: Maybe they're expecting it to use less oil:P

My dealer puts Motul 300V 5W40. I trust my dealer.

Doesn't say that it is Jaso MA2 or API SL in the datasheet but it looks pretty much like the Motul equivalent of the Castrol Power 1 Racing

Oil threads are fun :D because there are so many entrenched positions from 'the experts'. Looks like the old arguments no longer apply to the Wasser Boxer.

I don't expect the new bike to use much oil but time will tell - it didn't appear to use any during running in.

Hi

simply place your bike on its centre stand and check the oil sight glass on the right hand side of the engine the level should be at least halfway preferably in the upper half. oil change with filter is 4.2L
