Watch your speed in France.

So meanwhile on FGSer there's a thread saying: Go like a mad bastidge because you can spot Les Flics de Grande Bretagne a mile off..."?

Been touring europe for years now ,which means passing through France .Just come back from 2 week jaunt and couldnt believe how slow French drivers are now, particularly in villages and towns. Speaking to English resident who told me of massive fines and the number of mobile speed cameras used.
Having been done in Spain 6 months ago I took note of the locals and managed to return without a ticket but its a waste of time going over there on your riceburner now. Glad I started so many years ago and got speed out of my system ( after all thats why I changed to a GS).

Most of the posts here refer to getting stopped by the Gendarmes, but what about if you are caught speeding on camera?

I returned from France a couple of weeks ago and even though I didn't get stopped I can't help wondering if my indiscretions were recorded. If so, can anybody tell me when I can expect to be notified? There have been a few posts here (perhaps on the B & Bollox or That Offence Needs Seeing To) about getting caught in Italy and the delay of up to a year in receiving the notification, and I'm wondering if France would be any quicker in their response.

I do'nt think France will liase with UK so your probably ok , Flashed many a camera while on Spanish plates in France and never had any problems, only now I am on French plates do the fines come by post usually within 2-3 weeks . The post re the guy in Italy states he was in a hire car so presumably italian plates and italian police contacted hire car co who passed on the info .

Just done 4000 miles around Europe on two trips, found approach roads to Calais laden with cops and traps.....

That will be

then, I posted on that thread and it seems that both the Original Poster and I had entered a prohibited area outside permitted hours, rather than caught speeding. We were both in hired cars too.

Actually, I may have got away with another lapse, while looking for accommodation soon after dark on a week-end (absolute fecking murder) to our relief the traffic seemed to have abated. And there was St Peters dead ahead. We were in the huge square in front of the Vatican.:blast. Nearly two years now and still nothing.

Yet...

Otherwise you will run into the back of the "frogs" who have started driving at 20 mph in 30mph zones

They are now terrified at being "flashed"

I have tripped a couple of fixed speed cameras in France on Brit plates. The last time was about 6 months: no comebacks yet.
The increase in speed traps over the last couple of years is very noticable, even on the quieter roads :(

A few years ago I got done in France on an RN - they fined me the maximum "on the spot" and then 4 months later I got a further "summons" from the local "court" and had to pay as much again - I think that it was about £200 in all

We tend to 'moan' about our 'safety cameras' in the UK - at least we get some warnings of where they are and they are also painted a lovely yellow colour which is visible from rather a good distance.
Pity the poor french - cameras are fairly well hidden, rather camouflaged in their grey colour and their traffic police wear dark blue uniforms and have been known to hide in bushes and doorways and, only last month, were seen be yours truly to be standing in a ditch with only their head and shoulders visible holding a camera.

Surely if you get caught in the UK its totally your fault for crap driving and nothing else - good grief, even a £1.99 AA road atlas tells you where all our cameras are

Another nice little quirk of the frog police is.

A neighbour of mine who had been resident, say for a few years in France, but still drove a UK registered car, it was CT, (French MOT), and insuranced in France, but was still UK reg.

The flick stopped her one day and asked to see her details - they saw that she was resident in France, (a retired 70 year old English women), fined her £1,000 for driving an "illegal" car in France which she owned.

If you are resident in France it is illegal to drive a UK reg car for more than the first month or so, there are lots of "ex pats" doing it - and they are "rich pickings" for the Froggy police

And so they should be. No different to a Lithuanian car illegally in the UK.

I found the French/German/Belgian car drivers to be very "aware" of bikers, & indeed courteous, not like the majority over here...

They could do with diverting a few of those to pick up the very obvious streams of asylum seekers walking along the autoroute to the lorry park a few miles short of the tunnel entrance then...

I couldn't believe the crowds "hiding" in the bushes there, walking along the carriageway, or hopping up in plain sight into the back of the artics waiting by the road.

Watch out for solid white lines

I was fined 110 euros for speeding and crossing a white line while leaving a built up area in July.

The cop told me that all over France they were having a clamp down on speeding to reduce accidents. But crossing a white line to overtake in town was considered more dangerous. She told me France has one of the highest accident rates in Europe and Sarkosy has directed the Police get tough.

Regular travellers to France will be familiar with those black mannaquins at the side of the road indicating where someone has been killed. She told me they are removed after 1 year.

Makes you think

Highest? You should try Greece.

NHS doctor over there told me we have the drink problem they have the road accidents. On my way to Athens I witnessed two spectacular maneuvers including one where an X5 went "offroad"@80ish when an overtaking moron got sandwiched in the middle.

Greece ... great fun. :thumb2
