water in fuel ??????

Had a small issue a few weeks ago with a bit of missing rough running between 3 and 4 thousand rpm on my 05 1150 GSA(29,000K) after the bike had been stood for a couple of weeks. Ran it a while and the problem seemed to clear. The bike has now been stood for 1 week outside, this morning i dropped the oil changed oil and filter then started the bike and went for a run to check for any leaks. No leaks but at low revs the bike is running really badly, missing and occasionally cutting out. With all the rain recently and the bike being stood and a previous problem with the filler cap drain blocking is my best option change fuel filter etc and what else should i check. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Had this prob earlier this year, water in fuel tank, didnt know about it till i was out for a spin with the tank near empty. Dont think any water got past the filter though , but what happened was the filter filled nearly a third of the way with water, and the fuel pump started to work overtime to try drag through the fuel.

It was so loud i could hear the pump whine as i was traveling down the road with helmet and earplugs in.

Due to lack of fuel getting through, the engine spluttered and chugged, but it got me home.

Drain whatevers left in the tank, leave it to dry out , replace filter. and away ya go !!

Change filter, put a litre of meths in tank, swish it around ( water will mix with meths- not petrol) empty tank. Any meths left in tank will mix with the petrol and burn

I had the same problem with the old blocked bunghole: water sits in the petrol cap recess and pours into the tank when you open it to refuel. The Wynns dries it out (it's basically just kerosene AFAIK)

After the next rain, why not pop the filler cap and see if water is indeed pooling there. If so, you're probably on the right track but of not, you know to keep your mind open to other possibilities.

Wynns Dry Fuel

As Waterloo700 suggested, Wynns Dry Fuel is the business and saves any stripping down etc.
If it's no better after the Wynns then at least you know the system is clear and your problem lies elsewhere.

... lifted the tank for any reason ? If so you may be the latest in a long and inglorious line to have done this

Thanks for all the help so far,

OK plenty of water around the filler cap so,where does the blockage usually occur, top end or lower down, can the drains be cleared via the filer cap end with an airhose or is it a tank off job to get to both ends of the drains.

I have previously cleared it with a length of garden strimmer 'wire' and then blown it through with an air line.

Thanks for all the advice guys, after looking at it a while i decided to do the whole thing. the filler cap drain was blocked solid in the spiral tube around the neck, took it off and after half an hour with boiling water a pokey thing and an airline finally cleared it . I had a filter from a service kit anyway so thought while I was at it id change the filter. that was a bit of a pain in the arse to be honest, took me ages to find some eared o rings but finally got there . So now with new plugs, Oil & filter and fuel filter and c;lean drain holes the bike is ticking over great, it could be my imagination but i think its running better than it has done for some time. So thanks again......next time valve lash
