Dan.Your blockage was a bit of grit.Its just landed on top of my car roof!
I was thinking about this also, as my 1100GS did the same, and I noticed has started doing it again, so glad it's not just me.
Bit of garden wire did it last time, but the foot pump idea sounds good, but that was possible as i took the top out of the tank and disconnected the pipes so I had this peculiar fuel mouth with two metal pipes coming off of it, one with a hose that I presume is the exit pipe and the other to a large black... thing? dunno what it's for.
As for water in the thank, I wouldn't worry about it too much, I think I had about 2 mugs full in mine before I worked out why it was clearing (it was blocked when i bough it but didn't realise). The water turns to a jelly substance, which the Fuel filter keeps at bay, I left it until I came to replace the fuel filter then emptied the tank at the same time.
