water went in tank

i read about this on my research but didn,t think anymore about it till i went to fill up today, opened the filler to see water dropping into the tank, ran it up to the peak district and it cut out once when ticking over on the side stand, does it draw the water through or do i need to drain the tank to get it out, also is the drain hole visible when looking into the tank with the filler open so i can unblock it, thanks ps 1st gs iv,e owned so a naive

There's a hole in the filler which you can see with the cap open, try poking some strimmer cord or an old thin cable through whilst squirting with WD40.
You can use an air line from the pipe under the rear of the engine but run the risk of blowing the pipe off.

You may get away without draining the tank ......... or then again you may not

There are additives that will 'dry' out water from a fuel tank as well.........not entirely sure how they work or what they're called, but I've seen them mentioned here before.

I will have to do the same soon as well.....my drain hole is bunged and the last few times I've filled up I've had a few teaspoons of water run in

Clear the filler neck drain and chuck a bottle of Wynns Dry Fuel into a full tank (or a cupful of meths).

I had this happen, went to the trouble of draining the tank. Got maybe 10ml of water out of the bottom, and had to piss around with a big syringe and length of tubing to get the last of the fuel (the contaminated bit) out of the bottom. Next time I wouldn't bother, just unblock the drain and tip a few hundred ml of meths into the tank (or fill up with a few tanks of E10 petrol - ethanol is a co-solvent that mixes water and petrol, as long as the proportion of water is small).

I did 1000+ miles before I drained the tank (happened on a tour) without any problems...

thanks for the replies, can also be crossed pipes apparantly if it is the pipes and the charcoal filter is knackered, are these available from most dealers or can they be dried and re-used

Charcoal canisters are only fitted to USA spec models. If your bike is European spec it won't have one.

The two small pipes are neck drain, which passes through the tank and out. The other is the internal tank over fill, which dumps excess fuel out.

Both pipes end up at the same place aft of the right foot peg. If there is a third pipe there, then that will be the battery drain fitted to models when lead acid batteries were standard fit.

Water in filler neck ?

My old R1100RS filler neck gets full of water after a downpour.I've tried clearing the vent hose but it still gets full of water.
I keep a small plastic syringe under the seat & syphon any water off.

well it took a bit of coaxing and faffing, but in the end alot of penetrating fluid to soften it up, and the drill and wire method worked, water now draining away thanks for the ideas
