Doing a fair bit of travelling this week so have set up waypoints for all the places I'm visiting. One of these points was in scotland, but when I view the waypoint list on the gps it does not show in the list. If I scroll the map then I can see the waypoint on the map - any ideas why it does not show in the list with all the others?

Also, I some times find that when I enter a town name it does not find it, again I can locate it on the map. I have a full uk map set loaded.

When using map sourse to find a street, I often find it will not find it, if however I find the co-ordinates from Autoroute or another road close by I can find it that way. I have not yet found any where that is not on the map, just that I can't always 'find' it. I'm running version 6.3 of mapsourse.

Andy:

You have raised some good questions.

Concerning your point 1), which is that you cannot find a user waypoint you KNOW you put in your GPSR, be aware that the SP 26xx series will only display user waypoints that are within 200 miles of where the GPSR is at the moment (or, where it thinks it is, if you don't have a satellite signal available). The idea behind this limitation was to reduce clutter on the display. The workaround is to press the menu button when you are in the 'find waypoint' dialog, and choose 'near other' or 'use map' - what you then do is point the GPSR to the general area of where the waypoint you want to find is, and the text list of waypoints will re-order, showing waypoints within 200 miles of where you have pointed to.

Concerning your point 2), about not finding town names that you know are in the cartography database, this could be caused by one of three reasons:
  1. You are running a very old version of the system software - there was a glitch in the software prior to version 2.40 that limited city name searches to only the map segment you were located in at the time you did the search. The current software for the 26xx is 3.90, it is available free of charge from the Garmin Software Download Site
  2. You are being too precise in the spelling of the name of the town you want to find. For example, to find "Upper Rabbithash by-the-sea", just enter "Rabbithash" - don't try to spell the whole thing out. The search engine looks for a match anywhere (beginning, middle, end) within the town name.
  3. You might be too far away from the town. I'm not sure if the 200 mile restriction applies to searches for towns (I don't have my SP 26xx with me right now). Try using the "find using map" sub-menu, point to the general region, then try searching for the town name again.
[/list=1] Concerning your point 3), difficulty finding a street name when using MapSource on the PC, again, don't be too precise with the street name. Don't enter modifiers, prefixes or suffixes - if you want to find "Upper Skid Row North", just enter "Skid" and see if the street name appears in the list. Sometimes, if you enter the wrong city name, you won't get the street, because although you think the street is in, for example, Chicago, it's actually considered to be in a suburb of Chicago called 'Happytown' or something like that. So, if your search is unsuccessful using what you think is the correct city name, try again and just enter the street name, don't enter anything in the city name field.

Good luck - I encountered each these problems once myself, so you are not alone, or doing anything wrong.
